Your Monday morning astonishing artifact is the Malia "bee" pendant. (Spoiler alert: they may be wasps.) 🏺🧪
Malia Bee Pendant: A 3,800-year-old accessory found in a Minoan 'pit of gold'
This extremely detailed depiction of insects holds clues to the natural world of the ancient Minoans.

Crazy how every time there's discourse about gender neutral language for pregnancy/childbirth/etc, I see a bunch of people pretending like people who give birth and don't ID as women don't exist at all. Even people who probably think they're not transphobic lol

2,000 year-old leather baby boot from Vindolanda Roman fort on the northern frontier of ‘Britannia’. So small it’s unlikely the owner did much walking in it!

From the residence of the fort commander and his wife, it possibly belonged to one of their children. 📷 me

On a related note, if anyone knows any cool sounding jobs for a mainly C++ dev in Oregon, Seattle, or fully remote please tell me about em 😳

Apparently the university I live near, which is where I always assumed I would go if I can ever manage college, is shutting down their Classics program :(

I'm looking at schools in Seattle now (my partner is looking at tech jobs there anyways). Portland only has it at private colleges :|

A rare Roman sun hat is on public display at England’s Bolton Museum. The felt cap is believed to date to something after 30 BC and was likely made for a member of the Roman military who was stationed in Egypt.

It's important to me that everyone knows this is also the origin of "Dwight"
The name "Dennis" derives from Latin 'Dionysus', likely popularized by 3rd century martyr St. Denis, patron saint of Paris. It entered English with many variants & alternate spellings.

Which mean... DENNY'S is *literally* a place dedicated to the Greek god of 'merriment, madness and wild nature'.

I've shared grape-suit Dionysus on FB about a billion times but I don't know if I have here yet 😂
#FrescoFriday and it's Bacchus and Mt. Vesuvius. From the House of the Centenary in Pompeii (Regio IX.8.6).

An Agathodaemon slithers up to an altar below the god, while he pours some wine out for his panther. Vineyards are shown on Vesuvius' slopes.

This closeup of an early 1st c. CE fresco from the Herculaneum palaestra shows a rare representation of a woman (human or muse) writing. She seems to be inscribing something below a tragic theater mask. Her hairstyle and garments seem very Greek. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 1/

Not many things I love more than ancient artifacts that would probably be considered kind of gaudy/inelegant by modern aesthetics
I'm revisiting some notes on the Begram Hoard, so it seems an opportune moment to share this beautiful enamelled goblet, ca.1st-2nd Century AD, showing figures harvesting dates. #AncientBluesky 🏺

I really should have an answer for this, but I don't 💀anyone got some ideas?
Anybody know an accessible (for undergrads) and accurate chapter/article on ancient Greek clothing? It feels like the only places these exist are in 100 yo history of costume books that cover every era and are specialists in none... #AncientBlueSky #TeachAncient #Textiles
