This is probably the best "intro to me" I've posted thus far on bsky.
For today's #FossilFriday, I'm sharing a story about how I look for fossilized microorganisms in 2.5-billion-year-old black chert. It's a medium post, but no membership is needed to read it!

It is so very sad that random internet articles about curiosities are no longer authored by actual people with strange little passions. I'm not even sure what the internet is for now that AI articles are so pervasive.

The Trump Administration is trying to silence dissent and attack our most fundamental freedom: the right to speak out without fear.

I stood with my colleagues in the House and Senate to protect Americans from any administration that fears the truth and democracy.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER!
This is NOT A DRILL! It’s time to vote for THE BEST MINERAL…

CALCITE!!!

Thanks to its birefringence, under the name Icelandic spar, it made a critical contribution to our understanding of the wave nature of light! It even appears in the title of Christiaan Huygens ‘Treatise on Light’. ⚛️

#MinCup25
#MinCup25 Round 1 Match 4: This match of heavy hitters is bound to end in heartbreak as classic #calcite faces off against futuristic #perovskite.

We love them both, but only one can continue on to Round 2!

No More Unions Allowed At NASA. Happy Labor Day.
The White House has issued an Executive Order that strips the ability of NASA employees (and employees at other agencies) to organize unions.

"The whitewashing effort includes government agencies tasked with preserving history. And in every case, the resources were publicly accessible when Donald Trump took office.

Then they vanished."
We found hundreds of examples of federal agencies & institutions purging their websites of anything Black, including:

-Profiles of Black military heroes (Army)
-Documents on the Tulsa Race Massacre (National Archives)
-Resources for educators for teaching slavery (NMAAHC)
How the Trump Administration Made Government Websites White Again
The administration appears to have changed, deleted and restricted access to resources related to Black history from government websites.

ROSES is back. I honestly wasn't expecting that.

(For those that don't know, ROSES stands for Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences and it's NASA's main science funding program and it's usually posted in February of every year.)

I studied Jack in the pulpits for my undergraduate research project.

Definitely my favorite queer plant.
Happy Pride!

Jack-in-the-pulpit plants can change sex each year during its 25+ years lifespan. Plants can be male one year, female the next, and then back to male after. 🌿

Brood XIV is emerging in Cincinnati!

I saw hundreds of cicadas at the park yesterday evening, but they aren't singing yet. They only started to emerge in the last couple days (at least near me) and they need at least four days for their exoskeleton to fully harden before they seek out a mate.

How does the EPA know a pesticide is safe to use in my yard?

The EPA must evaluate both the risks and the benefits of each pesticide – and revisit that analysis at least every 15 years for every pesticide used in the U.S. An agricultural science professor explains the process: buff.ly/4HJim9h
How does the EPA know a pesticide is safe to use in my yard?
Federal regulations govern which pesticides can be used and give specific directions for applying them. Ignoring those directions is a violation of federal law.
