Job occupations, from an 1881 census. Every one of these sounds like something a sorely provoked Captain Haddock would should at someone in times of heavy stress.

"Diversifying" historical fiction isn't a case of shoehorning. It's a case of restoration. Archeological evidence reveals that ppl from Africa settled in Britain as much as 3,000 years ago, their presence recorded in the Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Tudor eras.

History is written by the conquerors.

Four pairs of dividers were found on the Mary Rose.

Made of brass, the pilot would have used them to plot courses and distances on navigational charts.

We didn’t find any maps or charts on the Mary Rose though - paper doesn't last long in the sea!

For the first 40 odd years of my life, I lived under state-sanctioned oppression. The reality is that a great deal of ppl are perfectly comfortable with fascism as long as it doesn't mean them.

To see blatant hate speech as "just an opinion" is the outlook of the perfectly comfortable. Same old.

WKND READ REC 20
really enjoyed this book. Thoroughly immersive world building, exposition delivered in small droplets, a web of overlapping characters, magic and rebels and monsters. #booksky #writersky #amquerying #sff

I suppose this is the point when I should say again that:

the amount of money the videogames industry brings into the UK economy every year is *more than double* the value of the fishing and steel industries *combined*

what this country is really good at is producing culture
yes. yes yes.

the UK is (not just the originator but) the setting for some of the most popular culture in the world. there is a whole genre of videogames that are set in an imagined Britain. 'soft' power is real economic and even political power.
Agree. One thing that I really liked about @jpspencer.bsky.social’s Labour Together report is it included culture in “growth spending”. So much policy about regional development in the UK basically regards culture, tourism, etc. as distractions from the real work of building trains to nowhere.

New YouGov polling. A monumental failure of our political class to educate, a monumental failure of our media to report fairly, for a generation

Art can't just be a luxury for the few. That requires a city where artists can actually afford to live and create, and where musicians don't just receive recognition but fair pay.

That's what @local802.bsky.social organizes for and I'm so proud to have their endorsement.
