Fascinating profile of a park ranger in San Francisco who works with unhoused residents and has adopted the novel tactic of treating them like human beings, building relationships, and helping them access resources on their own timeline.
Her job is to remove homeless people from SF's parks. Her methods are extraordinary
Instead of forcing people out of Golden Gate Park, ranger Amanda Barrows helps them find housing.

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

More than 100 years after its initial review that blamed Black men, the Dept. of Justice just released its report on the 1921 Tulsa race massacre

The report says the attack “was so systematic and coordinated that it transcended mere mob violence”

You may not be aware that over the last 50 years, the Supreme Court has chipped away at your Miranda rights case by case, rendering them weak and ineffective. You no longer have the right to remain silent, to an attorney, not with the foece you used to. Time for a history lesson. /🧵
Please document the gutting of Miranda in the US. I’ll wait.

I have always loved public libraries, but having young children has exponentially increased my gratitude and sense of indebtedness to them. Our local library is such a huge part of our lives. The books, the programming, the very intentionally curated kids’ section. It’s all such a gift.

This is wrong, but I’m glad I read through the comments for more ideas of delicious latte toppings!!
Happy Hanukkah to my Jewish brethren. Remember that you can still repent for putting sour cream on latkes.

Buxton's persistence in challenging the Tuskegee Syphilis Study is a reminder of the willful ignorance of the scientific and medical establishments to racial (and other forms of) injustice. Today we see it in the refusal to ban (or even regulate) the pulse oximeter. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

this goes to my other pet issue, which is that "kids safety" has become synonymous with social media use, when their safety in reality is most threatened by guns and cars
Also traffic is one of the top-ranked causes of injury in the US. Add that to the health effects of pollution and it is one of our most damaging public health exposures.

I think this is my underrated pet issue, that american transportation and roads and city planning is making us sick and unhealthy with aggregate more expensive healthcare outcomes
This happened to me when I went in for a routine checkup in Vegas. I told them I didn’t have a car and I just walk and bike everywhere, and they (1) looked at me like I was crazy and (2) told me I’m in the 99th percentile of non-sedentary behavior
At a routine medical appt, staff asked what I do for exercise.

Me: “Mostly I bike or walk for transportation when possible.”

Them: “Most people laugh when I ask that question. You’re doing good.”

Bike/ped infrastructure is #HealthyInfrastructure.

I know nothing about this business, but couldn’t they learn from Twitter’s mistakes? Or experiment with new strategies? Maybe things really could be different this time.
strange to me to be trying to purity-test Bluesky and ask "why will it be different this time, how does it justify investing time when Twitter turned out to be a 'waste.'" it doesn't, honey. Bluesky exists in a world that's not constructed for anything but constant turnover of stuff like this
