Gaeltacht planning guidelines which various ministers have promised to be delivered soon on numerous occasions since 2022 will now not be delivered appear to be on the long finger once again. #Gaeilge

Surprise and criticism as Gaeltacht planning guidelines delayed again until 2027
Campaigners for Gaeltacht housing are bitterly disappointed over the lack of urgent measures in the housing plan published today.

Soundabout - I love it #SpeirGorm
There's a roundabout in Cork where even during the worst traffic, drivers unfailingly allow others to merge in a "zip" by local custom. Driving through it restores my faith in society, every time.

I just found out it's known as the "soundabout", and that's just wonderful.

The rise in taxidermy fandom means certain types of bats are being decimated at alarming rates. Bats are protected in western countries, so if you see taxidermied bats for sale, big warning.

The Unethical Practice of Bat Taxidermy
Given the critical role bats play in ecosystems and the numerous threats they already face, it is unethical to engage in bat taxidermy. Conservation efforts should prioritize protecting these essentia...

I have spent quite a bit of time looking all this up because there is a Twopothouse and a Twopot river but while Twopothouse and NEW Twopothouse are in the general vicinity of each other, Twopot river is nowhere near them. Meanwhile Buildings of Ireland claims an Oldtwopothouse...

One of my favourite placenames
New Twopothouse, Co. Cork.

From an 18th century coaching inn, the 'Two-Pot House Inn'. When the Cork to Limerick road was built a new coaching stop was opened and named 'New Two-Pot-House' to distinguish it from the coaching stop on the older road.

Not inaccurate but probably still controversial...
I don't think it's controversial to suggest that the way that Ireland has developed a particular culture around the Presidency doesn't exactly look particularly republican. We would have handled a constitutional monarchy just fine #aras25 #speirgorm

this thing hides posts it judges as ‘rude’, by some US standard. Thereby silencing most of the conversations in Ireland and Scotland, at least.
Wondering why no one likes your posts anymore, even among your friends? It's because @jay.bsky.team and team have decided to hide a huge amount of content from all of our feeds by default.

Here's how to turn it off.

This says so much about us, dazzled by a speck of melanin
My favourite Hiberno-English-ism isn't any of the obvious ones, it's the fact that when we say "sallow" we mean the opposite of what everyone else means. It's not sickly yellow, it's healthy, positive

I've seen this go by a few times on TikTok now and I have to say, I love this idea. We need a way to convince people to keep running even if they don't win, maybe building the loss into it as a troll move is the secret.

The book-banners are organized. This is not trivial.
If you were ever wondering what we're up against, this is a website book banners created to train people to get books banned in their own communities.

I found my kids' school in here, and the books this website suggests I get banned from their library.

Always better when @philipb-h.bsky.social is subbing but, of all the problems with Ireland's immigration system, an extended bit on returning emigrants' driving licenses (of all things) seems...cursory? Lots of hoopla regarding the recent R1 presenter shuffle, zero about *producers*.

It's worth reading Mary McCarthy's 1986 review of Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale." Not for how she misjudges its achievement but more for what McCarthy, a brilliant writer and intellectual, couldn't see—and to judge how far America has come since then. #Skystorians archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes....

For those keeping count, Simon Harris "took to social media" to decry the shooting of Charlie Kirk the following day. He's gone cycling today, apparently.
'Member all the Irish wankers bemoaning "political violence" when Charlie Kirk was murdered - has anyone seen if they have anything to say about the attempted murder of women and children in the Drogheda IPAS centre?
No?
Funny, that.
