Proportionally, the estimated 100-200k Pride marchers in Budapest today would correspond to something approaching 1m in London or New York. And this in a country that has now spent 15 years under illiberal, authoritarian rule.

What a symbol of hope.
According to media estimates the participants to the Budapest Pride may have been in the hundreds of thousands defying the ban

One of the reasons we need to remove more concrete and plant more trees is because all this exposed concrete absorbs an incredible amount of heat, even compared to concrete that’s shaded.

It’s *well* past time we take climate change deadly seriously.

Every… EVERY… piece of physical and social infrastructure is reliant on a stable climate.

In the past year we've had a series of papers with results that've shocked #climate scientists - the globe is heating #FasterThanExpected & we don't fully know why

So, it turns out we're treating fascism just like we've been treating climate change:

– ignore warnings of experts
– buy into bullshit "alternative explanations"
- read "don't worry" media op-eds
– deny it will really be that bad
– start seeing major evidence
– hope somebody does something

One of the central principles in the Hong Kong pro-democracy protest movement was:

Do Not Split
(In Chinese: 不割蓆)

When you are part of a decentralized movement against an authoritarian power, it is critical to respect the roles others play, even when you do not agree with all of their actions.

In Ontario, we used to have smog days. Then we shut down the coal plants and our air quality massively improved. Now, with all this forest fire smoke (two years ago and again this spring), we have haze days. One step forward, two steps back.

I asked the one high ranking policeman I saw on 5th Ave why there were so few police. He said “We did not expect anything like this. Don’t tell anyone but I’ve only got 44 officers out here — and it’s a great crowd, great event, no incidents.”
I have never seen anything like this in NYC. 5th Ave covered from 42nd St well to the 20s. Nobody prepared for this volume. Volunteers are holding the traffic on all the side streets. No police in sight. #handsoff

I think this graph shows it pretty clearly: pretty much every other January with La Nina conditions has been a cooler than the surrounding years.
