Without govt funding you simply don't have the community of scientists scattered across the US that helped the US to take the lead in scientific development in the 20th century!
Members of Congress should be all over how this affects their districts!

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

The assault on NIH is a test for how the national media covers the Trump admin: Trump is shutting down medical research!

That is easy to communicate. Will they treat it as a 5 alarm fire in a way that forces the government to respond, or will they downplay & caveat it?

We had a now-published paper reviewed at a different journal. 4/5 reviewers asked for revisions and additional analysis, and the last reviewer asked for all experiments redone. Editor insisted they would consider w/o the last reviewer’s (expensive, >year of time) requests. 1/2
I wonder how much the system would improve if authors were allowed to simply ignore one review in its entirety when they revise their manuscript.

Here's the reality about the #LAFires this week: this isn't the first time ANY of these places have burned. Not even close. In 2018, we mapped CA fire history to look at fire frequency across SoCal. Santa Monica Mtns area burns more than anywhere else -- up to once per decade in a given spot. 🧵

Public stuck between an incoming govt that won't help them prepare for climate change (instead preferring to blame DEI), and an insurance industry that is paying attention to climate change but won't insure them
easy to read "insurers stopped covering homes in California right before these fires" as something sinister, but from covering this industry, I gotta say I think it's the opposite: no one is more aware of increased risk due to climate change than insurers

www.businessinsider.com/california-f...
Insurers dropped fire coverage for California homes months ago. Now, wildfires are claiming more houses in Los Angeles.
Some insurers have scaled back their coverage in California because of wildfires over the past few years, creating a challenge for rebuilding.
