I am genuinely impressed by large language models - they can absorb disparate components of text into some consolidated view, they can produce extremely good language and - with the right model - translate pretty well between languages and they are an excellent text based UI for humans to use. But..

Our photoswitchable HaloTag is out in Angewandte Chemie @angewandtechemie.bsky.social ! We now also show that this system can be used to control emitter density in SMLM. Congrats to Franzi, Bego, and our amazing collaborators. Check it out: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
A Photoswitchable HaloTag for Spatiotemporal Control of Fluorescence in Living Cells
Photoswitchable fluorophores are critical for advanced bioimaging. Here, we develop a photoswitchable self-labeling HaloTag that can reversibly modulate the emission of a bound fluorogenic dye via a ....

This #microscopymonday is a cleaning day. Watch how a #microglia cell mops up and phagozytoses debris and junk in a very messy neuronal co-culture. BTW, it was a proper cleaning job → the neurons made it and formed nice networks
Phase contrast imaging started at DIV1. One frame per 20 min.

“We are making sure that people have a stronger bond with our Kingdom and are well integrated and able to fully participate in society before becoming Dutch citizens” : Dutch society is obviously too alien & bizarre for a silly foreigner to integrate within 5 years, we'll take your tax money though!
Cabinet to make 10 years minimum to obtain Dutch citizenship
According to the government, the Dutch cabinet plans to double the minimum residency requirement for naturalization from five to 10 years, extending the time foreigners must live legally and continuou...

New tools! GreenPy and ApplePy are fluorescent biosensors for pyruvate with huge responses (20–40x in vitro) and a range of affinities (10s of μM to mM). These should be game changers for imaging of metabolism! Great work by Shosei Imai @sikmys.bsky.social and team 👏. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
High-performance genetically-encoded green and red fluorescent biosensors for pyruvate
Pyruvate is the end-product of glycolysis and a central metabolite involved in many biochemical pathways. However, a lack of high-performance (i.e., Δ F / F > 10) single fluorescent protein (FP)-base...

On Valentine’s day, 15 Assistant Professors at NIH who had started their research labs in the last 2 years were fired. Their scientific expertise was built over 10-12 years of training, most if not all of which was supported by NIH. The start up funds for their laboratories were paid by NIH
