Important, timely, analysis by @lgilbert.co debunking the commonly used line that "migrants are a burden". Shows that migrants are overwhelmingly bet fiscal contributors. Basically, you target migration, you crash the country.
"Home Office data suggests that recent immigrants are more likely to be working than British nationals and make higher wages than them."

✍️ Lauren Gilbert argues that migrants to the UK are net fiscal contributors, adding much more to the economy than they take out,

Obviously, it's up to the EU to decide who it wants to have access to its market and on what terms. But this suggests to me they're rowing back on commitments made in the Common Understanding agreed at the May summit 1/3 www.ft.com/content/8963...

Having studied immigration attitudes + misperceptions for decades, 3 things stand out:
- they change, but it's so tribal that each side thinks it's settled when it moves in "their" direction
- our misperceptions are a signal of worry as much as a cause
- BUT that doesn't mean facts don't matter...

Interesting lecture by @anandmenon.bsky.social.

How politics have shaped the narrative over the last 10-20 years.

He talks about people wanting change, but doesn't go into what change they want - maybe citizens don't know.

If we need a sense of direction what's it to be ? Ending child poverty ?

there's something horribly inevitable about what's happened!! what could we have done differently. . . and much more important, what can we do now, to give ourselves (most Brits) a better future. . .it's all a bit sobering and uninspiring, even if it's pretty revelatory! well worth watching
