Where we came from, and where we may be heading.

I post about technology, innovation, space, earth observation, heritage, and bread. MBA (Tech Mgmt) from Open University.
I just listened to @andyburnham.bsky.social's keynote at @resolutionfoundation.org Unsung Britain conference.

He gave this government his backing.

He made a powerful argument that Westminster must change its culture - be more collaborative, and move toward longtermism youtu.be/5Jc2waSxVH4?...

The law on universities and free speech prevents speakers from being *disinvited after they have been invited*. It does not require universities to provide a platform to whoever demands one.

Let's not mince words: the threat to cut funding to every university who disagrees with them is fascist.
This is pretty menacing.

Sarah Pochin wrote to Bangor's university student run debating society requesting that she attend to "answer questions from students."

When they said "no" Reform rolled all it's tanks onto the lawns and said they'll cut funding to the entire university if they win.

UK public now split one third positive v one third negative on economics and culture of immigration, after a dramatic softening after 2016.

Contributors include
- dominance of boats/asylum over free movement/visas
- starker political polarisation
- shifting media and online fragmentation

How to counter the threat to democracy from the rise of fake news, emotional content, misinformation, AI, ... ?

Just like Finland, would improved media literacy for young and old help ? IMO, yes.

In 2025 the House of Lords just released a major report on media literacy. It made a number of recommendations, saying that if media literacy was not improved it would put democracy at risk.

Growth ... you need to give it time.

Don't overpromise. Even more so if the issue is not really under your control.

Make people aware there are no simple solutions to complex problems. Yet another example of this today is Farage calling for an end to working from home - saying it's unproductive.
I just now read @stephenkb.bsky.social quick piece on "Convenientism" - and so have piggybacked my own comment, on unavoidable dilemmas in growth policy

GE victory was a protest vote to get Tories out.

Changing leader won't change recent polling.

Labour are showing themselves up to be a bunch of amateurs.
Am told Eluned Morgan, First Minister of Wales, is going to follow Anas Sarwar in calling for the PM to stand down;

Also that there will be "Scottish MP ministerial resignations" afterwards

@davidheniguk.bsky.social doesn't remember that
GE victory was a protest vote to get Tories out.

Reason we've had over a decade of poor growth is partly down to short-termism.

Growth takes time. Labour DO need to make sure all their policies are sensible, practical, and deliver for citizens.
How you get from massive victory to complete mess in 18 months is a story that should be studied for years

Finally, (some) politicians are waking up to it. It needs complete and urgent reform. Special News Agents report.

Hyperbole.

We had 15 years of poor growth under the Tories.

Tories had scandal after scandal. Over 200,000 dead during pandemic. Then Liz Truss blew up the economy.

Labour is nothing like that.

Labour DO need to make sure all their policies are sensible, practical, and deliver for citizens.
Many people on this platform just aren't getting it.
The jig is up.
The party's over.
Unless Labour MPs eject Starmer PDQ, recover Labour values, show how they'll fix our chronic problems, give us hope and inspiration instead of disappointment and frustration, they're finished.
No more denial. ⏰👃☕
