You're telling me the legislature mostly composed of car-dealership owners and former McKinsey partners doesn't like the idea of a dictatorship of the proletariat?

Note: while not unprecedented, it’s actually pretty rare for a sitting Catholic bishop to participate in a demonstration. It’s just not generally what Catholic bishops do.

Thus: Getting the hierarchy involved in this protest outside an ICE facility is no small thing.
Chicago Auxiliary Bishop José María Garcia-Maldonado at ICE detention facility: “Being here is an act of holiness…soon we will seek access to the facility to bring the Eucharist to our brothers and sisters; if they say no again, we will keep praying.”

🧊 helicopters have been circling my neighborhood in NW Chicago for two hours now. It is unnerving and I'm again reminded that we're all just expected to live like this for how long? Indefinitely?

This is infuriating. My loved one is a male breast cancer survivor and I can only imagine the horror of having to worry about getting care on top of feeling isolated.

I wrote about how Border Patrol taking the lead in immigration operations mirrors a shift that happens often in concentration-camp regimes, including Nazi Germany, and some ways we can respond.

One of my students did their CJ ethics midterm on the film Miracle on 34th Street and it’s so good 😆😆 Never have I considered the implications of this trial! This is truly why I teach.

It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight. But in neighborhoods across this city, ICE is getting chased by people blowing whistles and shouting. People are running TOWARD ICE to protect their neighbors.

It is absolutely vital that people of good will examine the role of institutions like the media, universities, and the Democratic Party in our authoritarian moment. I guarantee you the stuff in the book will change how you think--it changed me learning so much while writing it.

A great read. Crystal clear about what is happening here- and it's the same old fight, in many ways.

Been really moved by all the stories from Katrina survivors on TikTok. Now watching the Netflix doc. Struck by how this is the first major climate disaster (right?) but I didn’t realize at the time.

Yes, Eugenics to be sure, but also Necropolitics. That's what their policies boil down to:

I believe the GOP is of a mindset that there are too many people here and worldwide and that the overall population needs to be reduced to a more sustainable level.
While RJK Jr. tesifies, re-upping @sarahsloat.bsky.social's feature for us.

“These threats to defund mRNA research are putting a substantial portion of the U.S. population at risk,”... “It’s derailing research that is trying to provide cures for what are currently incurable diseases.”

Fiona Apple > that other lady who's in the news for getting engaged to that one guy.

For context, PG County is a Black ass county. Fiona Apple was working with an activist group in PG County which inspired her first song in 5 years. Can you imagine that other lady doing anything of the kind.

I went on Ezra Klein's podcast to discuss how Trump is building his own paramilitary force.

Grim as this discussion is, we recorded it *before* Trump's executive order directing Hegseth to set up rapid deployment units within the National Guard.

Firing and demoralizing feminized jobs as enemies of the state while brazenly bribing men with violent jobs that almost instantly puts them into the middle of middle class is very basic gendered warfare. Fulfilling the manosphere’s promise.
It is insane to me that the government can find money to pay ICE agents increasingly larger sums of money, yet teachers have to buy their own pencils.

Nothing revelatory here but it strikes me about once a week that a big part of the millennial experience is watching ppl with more power than you never face a single consequence. Landlords, bosses, politicians...yet we grew up being told to follow all kinds of rules.
