And because of ag gag laws no one with any power is allowed to acknowledge the obvious reason Iowa is the only state with increasing cancer.

And most of the soy/corn grown here is for animal feed. The industrial mining isn't helping the cancer water either.

Also if I can bitch about Iowa for a second, yeah we have a lot of food farming here, but the industrial quantity plus no regulations means our tapwater has DOZENS OF CARCINOGENS. Smart people here all know to never drink unfiltered tapwater.

Red states produce the bulk of our meat, true—though California still produces 8% of American beef.

But the red states’ role as America’s breadbasket is LONG gone. Most red state agro-economy has been redirected from human-grade food to commodity feedstock.

And much of that is on federal welfare.
It goes even deeper than this. The vast bulk of red state agriculture is corn, soybeans or seed crops.

And most of it is not for US human consumption! We export 20% of our corn, half of our soybean and seeds. The rest?

Most of it becomes oil, animal feed or….ETHANOL.

The subsidized fuel additive.
Half the fruits and vegetables in the US come from California, 75% of the nuts. The flyover states like to pretend they do much

Answer: 75% of all American farm workers are Latin American migrants. Yes, the same folks that the party red states support want to deport.

And no, they’re not doing it “to be nice.”
California alone produces a third of all the food America eats. So this is a lie.

But let’s break down the food produced by the red states:

Guess what percent is harvested by people from Latin America?

Update: this is no longer included in the final funding deal. I'm going to keep fighting to lower premiums and ensure Republicans can’t get away with a backdoor national abortion ban.
Senate update: Republicans are now trying to sneak a backdoor national abortion ban into their government funding bill. Republicans will stop at nothing to control women's health care decisions.

Underground utilities may make it difficult to build directly on top of the street, but if there are clear areas, maybe!

Another option is something like the Park Blocks in Portland - A linear park in the middle, narrow streets on either side, lots of housing on the surrounding blocks.

She was also a suffragist, attempting to register to vote in 1871.

The medal was revoked in 1917, but Walker refused to return it, and wore it until her death in 1919. It was restored to her in 1977.

Trump isn’t interested in truth. He is interested in subordination and control. The apology conveys to me that the BBC thinks they can sweep this under the rug with a robust “sorry,” but that’s just opened the door to an authoritarian to come at them. Where are the journalists to say “no, enough?”

All of Heather Cox Richardson's daily summaries are valuable. But the events in this one, about Democrats voting to give the GOP what they want to end the shutdown, & what has flowed from it, are pivotal.

The thing about Mamdani is that he’s a talented politician but not otherworldly or one in a billion, he’s just a competent guy with popular ideas who ran against an entitled piece of shit and to me it’s a lot more optimistic to imagine 1000 campaigns like his than to view him as a unique phenomenon
