Aussie living in southern Japan. I review audio gear and teach Japanese kids how to beat me up in Aikido. Old school enough that emoji are still weird to me.

My friend created fake news decades before the term existed.
20 years this year since I got to get a few stabs into The Australian via Media Watch.

Delicious times.

Murderous bears have saved us from the seemingly endless anti-foreigner sentiment. Japanese culture is more afraid of death.
Bear attacks and sightings have continued in Japan, with a woman found dead in a rice field in Akita Prefecture after a suspected bear attack while a bear made its way into an Aeon shopping mall in the prefecture.

Reminds me of when I lived in Tokyo. I always caught trains. Didn’t realise how huge greater Tokyo is until someone offered to drive me somewhere and it took hours. Even with 110 km/h train services it takes a couple of hours to transverse.
One of my absolutely favorite things about Korea is the public transit. There are buses, trains, and subways running across most the country and it's relatively easy to get anywhere without a car. There's still work to be done to make it 100% disability friendly but it is so much better than the US.
This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

One of the beautiful things about social media is that sometimes when you scream into the void, after a pause, a voice or two may answer back “fuck, me too” and you feel a little less alone in the world

So some obscure Chinese company decided to make a Bluetooth DAC/headphone/IEM amp with old, tiny Nixie tubes. They bought all the remaining stock they could find and this was the result.

On the tourist side it always looks this impressive. However, it isn’t so great on the other side.
The only immigration reality TV show I’d watch is if you take all the authors of those “Japanese wisdom” books, have them live together in a Saitama share house and watch them adjust to their new entry level jobs at large Japanese corporations in Tokyo.

As a non-American, it’s painfully ironic to see people on the “right” rant about the “elites” secretly plotting to whatever, then have a man with the name of a kind of scent come out and blatantly do the very things they claim, but in the name of their politics.

The idea of forbidden clothes is just mad.
In the 60s the mods wore mini skirts and white boots and white stockings. In the city the public toilets were full of teens changing into the forbidden clothes to go dancing.
Because I went through that I don't censor others' taste in clothes.

Apparently there was an earthquake in Kyushu soon after I got home tonight. I didn’t feel it at all. I only noticed it because I started browsing Reddit just after and someone had posted about it.

Is there a way I can switch AI off on absolutely everything? Browsers, phones, whatever, all of it. It's hard enough to get to the truth with most powerful humans constantly spinning shit, I don't also need robots collating all the nonsense and making up their own variety on top. It's just garbage.

The H5N1 subtype has been around since 1996, occasionally jumping to mammals, including humans. As with other strains, there is a risk of a pandemic outbreak, but that is uncertain.

What is certain is that if that happens, some do not want you to protect yourselves: the McCullough Foundation.

Sensoji today, through the lens of a blackened and hollowed out gingko. I never noticed the tree before, as it is off to the side in a smoking area, but now I’ll never see these grounds the same again, because once you see one fire-damaged tree at Sensoji, you see them all. And they are EVERYWHERE.
