One reason I left Twitter was because of the nonstop (in-) fighting between the centre/centre left and the left in housing circles. In an effort to build a bridge early on here, I’m going to talk about my experience, both lived, and as an academic/activist. To kick things off: zoning is racist.

I will never understand why townhouses, aka row houses aka brownstones aka the kind of single family home common in many cities, are classified as multi family homes. The new build single family houses have maybe six feet between them, space that could be INSIDE those houses if they were connected.
It’s honestly wild how few townhomes exist that aren’t right near a highway. We force every bit of density right next to noise and pollution, and keep the quiet areas reserved for the rich who can afford detached houses.

I can’t emphasize enough how ridiculously inequitable & regressive this is

When house owners talk about how they bought houses due to the "small neighborhood feel" what they mean is "a place where I don't have to see or tolerate renters" because renters are relegated to busy, filthy arterials outside those "small," "quaint" neighborhoods where they own property.

I can get a really nice condo for $900k-1.2M, but a good townhouse is $1.3M+ 😭 if I want to stay in Vancouver or Burnaby near my work

I’ve been saving a down payment for 10+ years, skipping even a honeymoon vacation, but anything but a condo is huge stretch 🙃

First homebuyer problems in Van… it’s pretty sad that about 70% of the housing options I can afford would basically require me to also get a car to commute to work 🙃 and it’s allegedly a buyer’s market! I have more options than usual…

This is so disappointing. This means us poorer folks that can’t afford luxury detached housing is still artificially blocked from nice quiet streets by archaic city zoning.
Ken Sim and ABC have voted to bury Lucy Maloney’s motion that would have brought six floors and corner stores to side streets across Vancouver, unlocking thousands of family-friendly homes.

I really hate the “housing prices are disconnected from local incomes” framing because people immediately jump to “must be NON-LOCALS with more wealth that’s the problem.”

When the problem is largely that we haven’t built enough. Higher local/regional income households are outbidding you.

Just a general reminder that homelessness is hard to solve at the best of times, and basically impossible during a housing supply shortage.

Wow. This is extremely suspicious behaviour by VPD leadership. And excellent persistent reporting. Give it a read, and also does anyone know how to apply public pressure onto them to comply with FOIs? Write to police board and AG?

It really grates my gears when high income people living in luxury homes at the top of this graph call small condos luxury and pretend those are the problem.

For some reason they’re very often fucking landscape architects??? Wtaf is happening at UBC SCARP.

I truly believe in everyone having access to adequate housing, but I often wonder how difficult it must be for frontline workers of SROs and shelters.

My apartment has had a few “hard-to-house” folks living in it. One fellow had a trash collection problem and caused constant cockroach infestations.

At best, inclusionary zoning is a tax on housing to pay for subsidized housing (that would still be better as a subsidy from a general tax pool since it would be less susceptible to market cycles)

At worst it’s a really regressive tax on the poor~middle income folks who live in higher density homes

i want to see as many people calling as loudly for the elimination of SUVs, which are literally physically destroying the planet, as call for regulation of e-bikes
E-bikes are the SUVs of the bike world. Big, heavy, fast, and ridden recklessly by the cycling population with the least amount of bike handling skills. The bike paths are not built for vehicles at these specs and safety legislation has not kept pace with the fad.

The Federal government needs to demand much better zoning or their pre-fab investments will be a waste.

Even the TOAs in Metro Van allow only small, 200m circles @ >12 storeys, and BC does not require zoning proactively even within those small areas.

I get very sick of people saying that local governments can’t do anything about global problems. Most car trips in cities are under 3 miles - we could absolutely get more people using bikes or riding transit at the local level!
"Progressives" who are believers in things like climate change and oppose what's happening in DC, but fight any kind of local change like bike lanes or reduced parked are just the most frustrating people ever. Because they generally 'get it' and are good people but: local stuff is important!
