You can have fast streets, or you can have safe streets.
The current USDOT is clear about its priorities.

Boston's fed grant to improve safety at key intersections has been cancelled by USDOT because, according to the agency: "DOT's priorities presently include... preserving or increasing roadway capacity for motor vehicles... [the] project includes several elements that impede vehicle capacity & speed"

Hearing that a bunch of USDOT grants are being canceled because safety is not an agency priority
While ~30% of traffic deaths involve speeding and speed limits in the US are routinely higher than recommended for safety, efforts to improve safety don't align with agency priorities #SafetyOverSpeed

Car buyers will now be allowed write off up to $10,000/ year in interest paid on qualifying auto loans
Car drivers can still get over $3,500 in parking tax benefits too
But, bike commuters got their $240/year benefit cut
It's not about the budget, it's a preference & subsidy for people who drive

We underestimate children’s abilities to bike their own bike for transportation because our infrastructure doesn’t work for children. My daughter can easily bike over 5 miles, which is around the distance of many errands, but my fear of her safety holds us back from taking those trips.

USDOT expects to provide 40-70 implementation awards and 400-700 planning & demonstration grant awards
I strongly encourage communities to apply for planning and demonstration grants. They're less competitive and you can still do a lot of important work to improve safety

Each day, hearing news of a different gov website that’s completely disappeared has been so disheartening. Yesterday, it was the EPA’s EJScreen tool, and today this. I’m sad for the staff who worked so hard to create these resources and sad for the US that we’re moving backwards so rapidly.
