When The Germs played their first gig, they didn't even know how to play their instruments. They created something deeply human and great. AI is definitionally incapable of giving us something that is great in the way The Germs were great.

Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian, Australian, or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

Abolishing DHS entirely and putting all of its principal actors on trial is the moderate compromise position.
THREAD: Judge Ellis is the first federal judge to review extensive body cam video of DHS's actions in Chicago. She finds that DHS *repeatedly* misled the public and made claims that were disproven by agents' own videos.

I'll go through some of the most egregious ones here.

i think if you want to have those disgusting LED headlights on your car, you should have to do a test where they blast you point blank with your own headlights and then you have 15 seconds to successfully complete some sort of vision-based task, and if you can't do it they push your car off a cliff

We gotta start close-reading Dead Kennedys album artwork like it’s the writings of Nostradamus
Real tweets from the White House are indistinguishable from anti-Trump AI slop.

Or, in this case, 1990s Adbusters parodies.

This would be so fucking rad. You Can't Win is not only a great book, it's also one of the best cases for prison abolition ever written and it's like a century old at this point.
A film adaptation of You Can’t Win by the burglar and hobo Jack Black had allegedly been in post production since 2020. with a screenplay by Barry Gifford?

I read Italo Calvino's _Invisible Cities_ on a work trip trapped in a dull hotel, over a cold, slushy evening in New York. I didn't want to be there and the way the book transported elsewhere struck me in a way that I don't know can ever be recreated.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

At least four cops spending Saturday night shutting down a local business. Seattle cops make up to $300k/year. Their clearance rate in 2022 for all reported crimes was 12.5%.
SPD out here on Northgate shutting down the taco stand between 8th and Roosevelt due to "multiple licensing and health code violations" that they wouldn't provide anymore info about.

Don’t forget that the sandwich guy was released at the scene and then re-arrested in a raid by a full tactical team. They were willing to kill him and and any neighbors in the way to get propaganda footage of the “arrest”.

Growing up in rural Eastern Washington every poor kid was either from a Taco John's family or a Taco Time family. I was Taco Time until this moment. I will betray the shitty fast food of my father and am now a committed soldier Taco John's army.
Emo about this. Taco John's is a treat when you live in Iowa and can't be going out to restaurants much. I know conservative assholes -- the same people who need to get Jesus out of their mouths -- are gonna be crashing this for their TikToks but whatever. Telling on themselves. Taco John's forever
It’s okay to be glad that restaurants are doing stuff like this AND absolutely furious about the utter failure of the United States government.

This argument drives me insane, because Alan Turing literally told us his position. In plain English. In the same paper in which he proposed the Imitation Game:

The two best pop bands I've discovered this year (Alvvays, Wet Leg) both hail from small, lightly populated Atlantic islands. I need some grant money to raise four kids in a remote cabin on Tristan da Cunha with nothing but snythesizers, guitars, and Queen records.
