Alcatraz is an old Spanish word for a seabird given to the rocky island in San Francisco Bay by an officer of the Spanish navy in the 18th c., when Spain claimed this part of the continent. Doesn't undo the horror of the gulag name, but at least it complicates it.

Not very convinced of the effectiveness of peaceful protest—historically, Ghandi and King’s movements were exceptional (and the people FACED heavy violence—and actively trained themselves not to fight back, in the case of the Civil Rights Movement). But this data is impressive, if correct.

Since the last articles/information I've collected about the Mexican government's strategies to protect vaquita (and subsequently totoaba, an endangered species of fish that is leading to extinciton of vaquita due to illegal fishing) it has stepped up in serious ways. Impressed to see it.

An interesting one. How practical would this be? I can see how they might reach some species, e.g. geese, but how do they orally vaccinate seabirds? And how often would this need to be done to keep up with flu mutations?
