Whether people would leave Twitter after it became a Nazi bar was really a test and most people failed.
A classic coordination failure: everyone makes excuses for why they go along with authoritarianism rather than resisting. And democracy and the rule of law crumble. We thought our institutions and culture were stronger, but we are following Hungary's path.
Former US ambassador to Hungary: "After years watching Hungary suffocate under the weight of its democratic collapse, I came to understand that the real danger of a strongman isn’t his tactics; it’s how others, especially those with power, justify their acquiescence." (h/t @bnovak.bsky.social)

This is *exactly* how the Musk Coup would have been covered by our news outlets if it was happening in another country.

Instead, all the American press can muster at the moment are euphemisms and sane-washing. www.doomsdayscenario.co/p/musk-s-jun...

This is so dangerous.

Get ready for all gov communication to be routed through X, so that you get exposed to the wild world of Musk and MAGA when trying to do your reporting or information finding.

This is anti-media.
There it is. NTSB only sending info out via X now. Expect the same from CDC FDA etc. soon.

Maybe I'm crazy, but when the new authoritarian leader is executing a blitzkrieg to consolidate power and demolish the pillars of our democracy, maybe the opposing party shouldn't vote for his bootlicking nominees who were selected for their blind fealty. I'm crazy, right?
16 Democratic senators recently voted to confirm the Trump-appointed Treasury Secretary who just gave Musk’s team access to a Treasury payment system that disburses trillions and holds mass quantities of personal information. Food for thought. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...

The champions of Free Speech are now forcing scientists to retract submitted publications until they can be checked for the appearance of “forbidden terms.”
BREAKING NEWS: CDC orders mass retraction and revision of submitted research across all science and medicine journals. Banned terms must be scrubbed.

Goes beyond MMWR +other CDC pubs. Applies to research already submitted to top medical journals.

Take a look.

This amounts to the most significant data leak in cyber history. Private individuals in the data business now have access to your Social Security information.

This violates privacy laws in every state. Hopefully, state AGs will file suit & pursue criminal charges.

If you’re a federal employee, you should know this is a lie. Congress hasn’t appropriated these monies and so it’s literally not there to be spent. Also, federal agencies are limited by law to a max $25K payout in the case of restructuring.
BREAKING 🚨 🚨 🚨

President Donald Trump's administration is set to offer every single federal worker the chance to take a "deferred resignation" with a severance package of roughly eight months of pay and benefits.

Lots of reporting suggested that, this time around, Trump and his lawyers would avoid the sloppy legal work that plagued his first administration so they’d fare better in the courts. I see no evidence of that in this round of executive orders. This is poor, slipshod work obviously assisted by AI.

Typos and formatting errors get repeated across EOs, revealing extensive use of copy-paste. The rhetoric sounds like a ChatGPT imitation of the 5th Circuit’s laziest rulings. And the legal arguments are frequently fringe in the extreme, in a way that will likely piss off Roberts and Barrett.

Just a reminder of some of the context around the TikTok ban: In 2020, Trump tried to ban it via executive order a couple months after K-pop fans used it to organize fake signups to Trump’s Tulsa rally, which led him to publicly overestimate how large the crowd size would be.
