"The Economist analysed 347,000 PhD abstracts published between 1812 and 2023."

"...In every discipline, the abstracts have become harder to read over the past 80 years. The shift is most stark in the humanities and social sciences"

I have been really enjoying reading (and reflecting on) this paper by @benmoll.bsky.social

I feel it has a lot of important implications for how we do economics - and not just macro.

An empirical econ paper needs two things: 738 robustness checks concluding we can’t really ever fully be sure of internal validity in the appendix, and one (1) wild back of the envelope calculation indicating that the result is world-changing in the discussion section
Now I've come across several instances of people writing, essentially:

'Let me provide a very rough estimate. Don't take this number literally, because it has several flaws.'

And then their number becomes cited as the canonical figure on the topic.

Today's edition of "📈📉 papers you should know":

This classic paper (by Ben-Porath and Dekel) gives a cool example demonstrating the power of signaling in strategic interactions. In particular, it shows how the mere *possibility* of a costly signal can shape play even if the signal is never used.

Russian intel/sabotage ship Yantar showed her flag exactly on top one of Irelands LNG pipelines yesterday, comms cables are only close by.

LNG is Irelands main electricity source.

Opinion: Russia/GUGI is intimidating Ireland by this action. It is 100% a deliberate choice to turn on the AIS.

Just to emphasize again the key point from this great JMP: there has been a massive shift in political realignment such that less educated voters sort into the Republican Party due to cultural messaging, while economic policy only modestly keeps them in the Democratic Party

Russian intel / sabotage ship Yantar is smack on top of some of Europes most important comms cable in the Irish Sea.

We know this because she put on her AIS for 4 minutes (ergo, this is a show for an audience).

Last seen a few days ago with an oiler and a frigate. Visual and AIS.

Key finding: Comportment grades had no measurable effect on any of the student outcomes. However, we cannot rule out small effects as precision was somewhat limited.

Italy brings back 'Grades for Conduct':

Teachers in Italian middle-schools now have to grade the behavior of students in school. 🏫

Grades will show up on students' report cards. 📃

Whats the evidence this kind of policy? 📉📈

Good news: Wages have grown faster than inflation for 18 months.

In October:
Wage gains: 4% in past year
Inflation: 2.6% in past year

This is how most Americans will ultimately be able to get ahead. Prices won't go down, but wages will go up enough to offset the higher prices.

Excited to join the econ dialogue here on Bluesky.

But why wasn't economics even an option for your "interests" when you create an account?!
