Trying something new this weekend, linocut! I’ve been wanting to learn for a while & finally snagged a workshop spot at Martha Street Studio. I’ll have holiday cards printed when done. Just as satisfying as I’d thought it would be, this may become a regular practice.

Not in a position to add to my art collection at the moment, but anything @erikaleesears.bsky.social does with lemons (and other citrus) is absolutely delightful!

Early autumn light, meadow study
Spruce Woods Provincial Park, Manitoba
September, 2019

A little autumnal light & landscape from my archives. I've been collecting "meadow studies" for decades. The magical mix of light & texture creates a feeling of calm contemplation.

This series came from a workshop assignment in which I was tasked with photographing an egg. Looking to make the form of an egg more interesting, I photographed it through various textured pieces of glass. Now I use this technique to turn flowers into something surreal.

Simple techniques in the studio can yield beautifully surreal photographs. Bringing textural abstraction to flowers through experimentation.

Introduce yourself using only one food you refuse to eat, one movie you’ll never watch again, and one song you can’t stand.

Pearl onions

The Beekeeper (too terrible to be even remotely fun)

Any music by Philip Glass (not technically songs but I find all of his work viscerally grating)
Introduce yourself using only one food you refuse to eat, one movie you’ll never watch again, and one song you can’t stand.

Tripe (tried it, hated it)
A History of Violence (tried it, hated it)
Pachelbel’s Canon (hate is a strong word, I just find it cloying and overused)
Introduce yourself using only one food you refuse to eat, one movie you’ll never watch again, and one song you can’t stand.

Eyes Wide Shut

Fall may be fleeting, but taking the time to explore a still life study of some colourful autumn leaves led me to create one of my favourite seasonally-themed still life photographs. (not shown in the post preview, click through to see!)

I found it surprisingly sweet and worthy of contemplation. (Although I was slightly disappointed with the lack of branching paths.)

Perched on a rocky ridge dotted with white spruce trees, the fuselage of a crashed Curtiss C-46 “Commando” twin-prop cargo aircraft has become a canvas for one of many striking murals around the town of Churchill, Manitoba.

someone called AI summaries "mansplaining as a service" and now I can't unthink that.
I'm sick of this tiresome equivalence of AI aggregated information and the concept of being educated. It would be more accurate to equate AI with someone who's read up on lots of things without really understanding it but is unable to admit they don't know something. And I'm a software dev!

Proud of my home state, even prouder of Los Angeles. So much heart and a deep sense of community there - what a profound year of supporting each other they have had already.

But hey, if this kind of peaceful resistance is scary enough for the fascists to send in the marines, let’s all take notes?
