ICYMI: I wrote about the corporate-IP-ification of fanfic, and how heavily normative biases inflect what's being plucked out of fandom for big fancy book deals.
"Feed fanfic into capitalism, and it comes out shaped like capitalism."

@readingtheend.bsky.social dissects the trend pulling fanfiction through the traditional publishing pipeline (and what it means for fandom):

Do you know how many actual human beings could, FOR A VERY REASONABLE PRICE, generate a list of books people can read over the summer? People do that for their blogs, for nothing, every day. Seriously, this is madness.

We can blame AI for this but also this wouldn’t happen in a media industry where owners and publishers didn’t view the articles as just some burbling noise to tuck in around the ads
I spoke to the person who AI-generated the Chicago Sun-Times reading list. Says he's very embarrassed. This was part of a generic package inserted into newspapers and other publications, so likely to run elsewhere. He didn't know it'd be in Chicago Sun-Times

Re LLMs writing term papers: the other day I saw someone say that using LLMs to write is like bringing a forklift to the gym. It's not that the weights need to go up; it's that you need to do the lifting. The doing of the work is the result, not the paper being done or the weights having moved.

GOD I just love @emilyhughes.bsky.social’s writing so much, this Tournament of Books judgment is great in and of itself but then it builds to a more broadly urgent conclusion that makes you want to stand up on a chair and applaud, which is, I think, the whole thing of criticism at its best. read it!
