May (2002) Dir. Lucky McKee – A modern Frankenstein with bite. This stylish, unsettling retelling shifts perspective to a lonely young woman whose yearning for connection turns macabre. Angela Bettis delivers a heartbreaking and haunting performance. Strange, sad, and deeply human horror.🎞️📽️

The value of reading history is you know that in 1860 there were abolitionists who were so demoralized that they thought chattel slavery would be permanent. 5 years later those still alive had lived to see its end.

How are we going back in time?

“The misogynistic views harboured and perpetuated by the manosphere, channeled through social media and podcasts geared towards men, are entering young boys’ minds as “fact,” Carolo says.”
In the backlash to the Me Too movement, some undergrads are now entering university with fundamental beliefs “that blame women and the women’s movement…for the challenges that young men are experiencing in today’s society,” one violence prevention advocate warns.
What Happened to the Campus Me Too Movement? | The Local
Without enough brothers to fill their houses, some fraternities have begun renting rooms to non-students desperate for cheap rent. The results have been messy.

Oh my god! This brings back memories.
Not a book but a series. I used to devour these mini illustrated classics in elementary school. They turned me into a lifelong reader.

people all morning have been pointing out that Joyce Carol Oates is not a good person. yes she is an awful person which comes out pretty often but that is why she is such a brutally effective poster. she is not a friend she is a writer, which is a type of poster. stay away.

Capitalism says productivity is the most important metric in determining value

That you must “earn” everything, even food, housing and healthcare.

How do you earn it? By working until you die.

It teaches people to see children, the elderly & disabled as expendable.

It enriches the wealthy only

Forgive me, I deleted my previous mutual aid post because I was having issues with PayPal. That has now been resolved. I'm a disabled woman living in deep legislated poverty in Ontario. Any help is greatly appreciated. Again, my apologies for showing up twice! ko-fi.com/frownfrump

What I will add is that these politicians are living in a reality so far removed from what mentally ill unemployed people are going through. They do not comprehend that we value the ability to support ourselves through work but haven't had the chance because we face lack of employment. ahhhhhhhhhhh

Half the people in this deeply cursed province couldn't even be bothered to vote. There is no hope.
I feel completely dismissed and invisible. The system in place has failed to care for or even acknowledge me and many others. It’s unfair and there should be stronger advocacy and support. Who else is going to do this advocacy though? People are wrapped up in their jobs and families.

I think the other problem is that many people are in DEEP poverty but are doing things to mask how dire the conditions actually are out of shame. Someone may APPEAR to be scraping by but they just aren’t. I wish I had more to offer but most days I feel like I’m floundering myself.

Had a really nice meal tonight and as is increasingly the case, I think about those who do not have this. Who are being deprived of food in 2025. What are we doing here, as human beings? We’ve lost the plot.

This is absolutely true.
I don't know about other countries, but public health experts here minimized this the same way they did COVID.

It is as if they think their job is to keep the public calm rather than to inform them.
This was clearly the trajectory we were on in the Spring.

We could see this coming.

Rather than ring the alarm bells, too many PH officials jumped on every opportunity to minimize this, even last month here in Ontario.

It’s shameful.

I didn’t think a book first published in 1934 would be such a page-turner but I’m already over halfway through. Silly me. I believe Carson was younger than me when she wrote this. Astonishing.
So thrilled to find this locally. I’ve known about Persephone Books for years but didn’t know how to access their titles in Canada. Thanks to @radzpandit.bsky.social for writing about this book on her blog!
