Rather than admit Flock represents an untested tech w/unintended consequences, OPD and enabling Council members are rushing to trap public in a contract that will increase in scope over time. But unlike other jurisdictions, our local media is helping them.
Judge orders police to release surveillance camera data, raising privacy questions
The judge's ruling in a Skagit County case could affect dozens of Washington police departments using Flock technology.

Live Reporting: City Council Vote Ties Over Changes That Would Have Curtailed Evening Meetings
Live reporting yesterday's Council meeting often felt more like announcing an unhinged sports event than the typical council meeting. After Ramachandran stalled CM Fife's amendments to the Jenkins/Ramachandran Rules of Procedure update with an unheard of three substitute motions—the Council finally took a vote and Fife's motion failed.

Mamdani: 51.5%

whatever you think of Spanberger, the fact that her opponent ran a campaign based almost entirely on transphobia and is on track to eat shit in the biggest blowout the state has seen since 2009 is unambiguously a huge win
Earle-Sears ran what felt like 12 billion ads about how much she hated trans kids and I didn’t hear a single pundit say she should stick to real issues that affect real people.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrat Abigail Spanberger wins Virginia governor’s race.

i'm always very curious how much this sort of advertising messaging makes a difference. folks always act like it moves the needle but…
There are a lot of election ads on and Democrats still don’t know how to talk to voters. They’re still using big words and rising number graphics and all that 90s shit. You gotta talk to people like they’re fucking cavemen. HIM AN ASSHOLE. IS HORNY FOR CHILDREN. Shit like that

For the past several years, the decisions on important legislation have been made at poorly attended and noticed committee meetings. Luckily the Oakland Observer is paying attention
At Council Committees This Week, 9/30/2025
The Committee meetings this week are designated as “special”—meaning they do not need the same kinds of advanced noticing that a committee would usually require. The meetings would have happened last week, but were bumped for Rosh Hoshana in the original schedule prepared at the beginning of the year.

I find it interesting that in its hurry to answer OPOA and tech bro led concerns about public safety, Oakland has rushed to get into bed with ICE contractors and not looked back. One of the practical outcomes of a Council dedicated to satisfying those media-controlling groups

this seems wild to me. you end a boycott when you get the result you wanted. that signals that it was the decision that made you boycott. continuing to boycott just means the company has to move on from caring about you
Everyone is getting real fuckin good at boycotting so I wouldnt expect a whole ton of people to come back tbh. Especially if there’s a price hike in the immediate future. People would rather stare at a wall than continue to support whatever the fuck is happening next with their $
We should not care or reward Disney for this. We must make their bottom line hurt for even considering doing something like this. Don't let up. Other companies need to see that bowing to fascism is not something you can do without consequence.
