We tell ourselves that the dehumanization driving mass deportation is something foreign to us as a nation and are shocked to watch it play out here, but as heinous as it is, it is also VERY American and has played out repeatedly throughout our history.

We compare ICE to Nazis like this somehow relieves us of having to reckon with our own history by labeling the heinous acts as being antithetical to the American ideal.

I have been struck by the parallels between slave hunters and slave patrols and modern day ICE in section talking about free black parents in NYC fearing their children would be captured by slave hunters when they left home to attend school.
