This is exactly right, and I hadn’t thought about that 2004 feeling in years
I feel like I felt after the 2004 election. In 2000, Bush didn't win, but he took power thanks to SCOTUS In 2004, he actually won and, despite 9/11 and letting Bin Laden escape and the disaster in Iraq and the recession and and and ... won by a better margin.

As @jvl.bsky.social pointed out, Harris ran a smart campaign. She was a solid candidate. Trump ran a disastrous campaign and is in clear decline. This was a clear choice. No matter who wins, half of voters either chose bigotry and authoritarianism, or had no problem with it. And that’s hard to take.

I have been catching up on the full nearly six hours of the MSG Trump rally. At one point they actually played "Dixie," an anthem of the old South.

The attempt to achieve mass deportation would trigger a set of local/federal standoffs which would recreate the sectional crisis of the 1850s. Many thousands of people would be harmed. And it would be a depth charge into our already unstable politics.
the united states literally does not have the state capacity to do this and what it will look like in practice is empowered cops, sheriffs deputies, and national guardsman going house to house rounding up people
Speaker Johnson says deporting 4.5 million people will be his top priority in January. Is this what voters want? We're pretty cooked as a country if so.
