i envision a utopian future for technology, where when you launch your computer there are no more programs, no more browsers, but just 4 buttons that say "Gamble", "Goon", "AI", and "Borrow Money At An Exorbitant Interest Rate"

Elon Musk is worse at hiding it but this is the problem with all billionaires: they are a threat to democratic governance. They have an insatiable need to own and control everything. If you want to be free you have to curb their power, and demand political leaders who understand that
Elon Musk is against the European Union being the European Union —he posted this after X (fka Twitter) was fined for violations of the EU’s Digital Services Act.

Propaganda literacy is being able to recognize when you are are the target of propaganda, which more frequently looks like an outrageous opinion or semantic claim that you argue about (intentionally legitimating a bad faith frame), than it does being shown a 1940s propaganda poster created by nazis

The problem is devs want to treat data as a property rights issue when personal data are actually observations of behavior to be used as evidence—primarily for social surveillance and control. It is rendering people in your community into relationships with power outside of their control or consent.
I do not have small enough words to communicate to ML researchers that if you take people's data, EVEN IF IT IS PUBLICALLY AVAILABLE, and then you upload it to huggingface without communicating with them or even talking to them about what it's for, people will be mad at you.

To give a schematic overview of the past decade, the ZIRP era empowered Silicon Valley to build wealth and infrastructure equivalent to micro-states, which our neoliberal leaders, allergic as they are to the idea of state intervention, were all too happy to facilitate. (cont.)

This sets up an absurd standard where the only justification for criticizing Kirk is if he personally committed violence.

But the entire reason liberalism is under attack is the constant lies and endorsement of violence by prominent conservatives, not because they're doing it themselves!

having now played silksong, they should've made me pay £10 more
there should be a discount for Silksong proportional to how long you've had it on your steam wishlist

this is social engineering. curating the information ecosystem in the UK, particularly for the young, by silencing voices that the state does not like in order to limit what is known. wikipedia in particular is hated by the tech-oligarchs, and I doubt the site being hit by the act was an accident
The U.K. Online Safety Act was (avowedly, as revealed in a recent High Court case) “not primarily aimed at protecting children” but at regulating “services that have a significant influence over public discourse.”

We are now in an era of technosocial politics where data, ML models, AI etc aren’t just reproducing biases through inattention & lack of oversight; the fascist right is actually well read on this subject, knows how these systems work, and is using them to bake in their explicit biases intentionally

The ultimate goal of Generative “AI” in almost all capacities is to remove agency and accountability entirely. Shift blame from people to machines, ignoring the machines are made and deployed by people.

this is the real use case for AI: creating a centralized source of "truth" that can be altered at the whim of its fascist owners. technology cannot be disconnected from its financial backing & political consequences. pretending it "could be useful" in a vacuum is a fantasy. bsky.app/profile/pale...

A live-action ‘ELDEN RING’ movie is officially in the works at A24.
