You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.

Btw, that means in the last 24 hours we've had:

-Cory Booker going for a record in holding the floor
-Ruben Gallego putting a hold on VA nominees over cuts to veterans care
-Adam Schiff putting a hold on Ed Martin's nomination for DC US attorney over... a lot

That's a genuinely good start.

I really don’t understand how these university presidents think this ends well for them. I don’t know if it’s a failure of my moral imagination or what but I can’t figure out what their calculus is

Again, this is clearly illegal, in violation of the requirements of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act and the Administrative Procedure Act. Universities need to fight back, NOW.

Universities need to stand up for their interests and be vocal collectively to defend free speech and independent inquiry. Trying to lay low and hide is not going to work.

Point for the ancients in the old dispute with the moderns. The problem of virtue is not eliminable in politics.
one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

For the 79% of heterosexual married women whose legal married name doesn’t match your birth certificate or passport, get ready to have your voting rights frozen.

Yes, read that again.

No, that is not hyperbole.

Act now.
“If a married woman hasn’t paid $130 to update her passport —assuming she has one, which only about half of Americans do— she may not be able to vote in the next election if the SAVE Act becomes law,” @wendyweiser.bsky.social tells Glamour

Waking up yesterday being a student felt bizarre. I miss being in the classroom teaching critical thinking: how to analyze documents; identify and critique bias; and locate all the places power manifests. Being a high school teacher in Oklahoma may have been the most important job I’ll ever have.
