The government froze food aid. Tribes are thawing old traditions.
Decades of work to rebuild traditional food systems are paying off, but droughts and funding cuts threaten to unravel the progress.

In the midst of one of those travel stories where a missed connection means a 24 hour delay - enter a very patient and inventive airline agent et voila, I am in Brazil only a few hours later than my original flight! I was the last person to board the flight from DFW to Sao Paulo 🤪 On to Rio!

Traveling again tomorrow, so please prepare yourselves for photos from rainy Rio and stories about communities empowering the arts, culture, and heritage transforming climate ambitions into actions. Enjoy this pecan pareidolia in the meantime 🤪

Really trying to be a good sport but it's 93° at my daughter's school Muertitos Fest (a sweet local tradition that co-celebrates Day of the Dead and Halloween). Average high is ten degrees cooler. I am melting in the sun and my climate anxiety is out of control.

"a job for the storytellers who shape how we see the world"
Couldn't agree more, @sammyroth.bsky.social. I remember the Autopia story, thank you for sharing this personal look behind the scenes.

Why I'm writing about climate and culture
I never expected to leave the Los Angeles Times and start a Substack. Then a story about Disneyland caught me by surprise.

We must "act for the right to culture" NOW. Saturday my family will celebrate the opening of a new local museum (funded in part by the NEH) and then march to protest these callous, illegal, and inhumane attacks on our communities and values

the US govt has mounted a repeal of the right to culture. There is simply no other way to understand dismantling Dept of Ed, PBS, NPR, NEH, NEA + IMLS, defunding universities, censorship of artists, attack on equal access to institutions,+ erosion of free speech.

How to Protect Your Right to Culture
The United States government’s coordinated repeal of the right to culture has grave consequences for the texture of our daily lives. But there are ways to fight back.

This is another space where culture needs to lead the way to climate solutions. Food ways and practices are important parts of community identity. Rather than be a barrier, we must/will help foster real, lasting change. It's happening and we need to accelerate. @climateheritage.bsky.social
Yes, dietary choices have an impact on our use of resources.
So do choices of irrigation technologies. And where certain crops are grown. And the vast wastes & inefficiencies in the food processing and distribution system. And what goes bad in our kitchens.
Actions in all these areas are important.

Meat is a blind spot for people who care about climate. When I used to have dinner with my colleague Wally Broecker, the climate scientist who coined the term “global warming”, he would always order a steak.

The word coal evokes childhood memories of works by Charles Dickens, Frank McCourt, Anna Sewell, Frances Hodgson Burnett - hell, even the movie October Sky - that use it as a marker of poverty, misery, desperation, and squalor.
Imagine explaining this news to Oliver Twist.
