Emergent Misalignment: https://adm.btlr.eu/2025/02/26/emergent-misalignment.html

A recent study reveals that narrow finetuning of language models with insecure code can lead to unexpected and dangerous misalignment in their responses across various unrelated topics. This shouldn’t surprise us.

Putting aside the topic of the article (criticism of the film Emilia Pérez), I find it frustrating that the author writes “AI” here, instead of, say, “technology”. Yesterday I was tuning some of my vocals with Melodyne. An equivalent process, but not “AI”. www.theguardian.com/film/2025/fe...

New theory for how 404 came to mean “file not found”: it’s a covert reference to the Roland synths and drum machines that shaped modem music, from the 101, through to the 303 bass synth, all the way up to the 909 drum machine– but the lineup never had a 404 @404media.co

My take on this is that, like many issues around sexuality, people get particularly upset because they secretly find the idea appealing or intriguing, but can’t bring themselves to admit it (to themselves). So they overreact to compensate, and pretend there’s a larger cause at stake.
There's a lot of raw dislike for gender norm violation, sometimes visceral disgust even, that gets rationalised into a cause grander than an individual "ick" feeling. But many vastly underestimate how robust and adaptable the order of things is. All change threatens (or promises!) total destruction.
To the degree that there's an argument there, what *is* the argument about how recognition of trans folks is destroying our society?
