My first editor told me in 1998 the cover artist's job is to get a bookshop customer to pick up the book. The editor's job with back cover copy was to get them to open it and read the first page. My job was to write an opening to get them to turn that page to read on. Then we had a sale.
Seeing more conversations about editors not reading all of every submission again.
The fact that this is controversial puzzles me because... write a better opening paragraph, then?
Even if the editors did read all of it, the readers won't.
