Did this trip for the 3rd time today and I love it so much. It feels like a bit of faff to load/unload my wheelchair to go for a short stroll, but it’s also nothing compared to the headache of driving downtown and looking for parking.
I love my mobility options!
One of my first tweets as bike mayor was about how my bike is my mobility aid. Some old crank replied that I can’t be disabled if I ride a bike. Anyway, I achieved peak mobility aid today when I transported my electric wheelchair on my e-trike so I could *finally* enjoy Halifax’s Public Gardens.

The province: We don't need the coastal protection act because cities will protect coasts.

Halifax: We're gonna protect the coast.

The province: How about go fuck yourself.

Current fire-closure status: we don't 100% know if COLT closed, BLT is closed, I called 311 to ask about e.g. the Barrington St greenway & they said they've been getting a lot of calls and they have no idea, and their only advice they can give is to not try anything until the province says something

The logical conclusion to continually wasting money harrumphing about why bike lanes cost money
Purdy, who doesn't like when the city wastes money, wants to hold a plebecite on Morris street (not even a referendum!)

Taking Morris slower every day. Feels good to not hurry, actually
One note on this, the motion is gooing to look for alternative routes for bike riders, but bike riders can still legally ride in car lanes so a lot of us, especially folks like me, won't use shit alterntatives and will continue to slow down truck traffic on Morris.

You can’t have a “good working relationship” with someone who is operating on threats.
He says they need to re-establish a good working relationship with the province and that is why he’ll support the rescission.

The Canadian government responded to its own news of an upcoming pause on permits for weapons exports to Israel by fast-tracking those permits to bridge the pause without a gap in continuous shipments.

If you don't know the news about Chris Smalls right now, I recommend looking that one up. I'm really not sure what kind of radical thing I can say about this that's not already obvious

The universe is an unjust and cold place, but it does have incredible comedic timing some days.

(This is the street the province declared all of four days ago must remain open to two-way traffic, or else the provincial economy will spiral to nothing).
Morris has been reduced to one lane for water work. I assume the port has shut down and ambulances are refusing to even try answering calls in the area.

Really really do this! Especially if you have a PC MLA! Even one in cabinet or a “safe” PC seat! The more noise MLAs hear about how bad this looks & how much people hate it the more nervous they’re going to get. Houston & Fillmore are relying on creating the impression that everyone’s on their side.
Think the strong mayor concept is bullshit? Write your MLA, Premier Houston and Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing John Lohr, urging them to abandon "strong mayor" powers

You know, if the province just decided they were going to flatten the entire city to turn it into roads and parking lots, at least then it would be over. But council getting threats over and over again from the premier over a single fucking bike lane that's been approved multiple times since 2014...

"Places that allow for children’s play can create dynamic neighbourhoods, intergenerational encounters, and meaningful participation in urban spaces – if only we let it happen."

This is about kids and play, but it's also about all of us. We all need places to connect with other people.
Alarming finding from case studies of urban play projects.

“Because of a range of aggressive behaviour from adults, children’s use of streets and public spaces were consistently restricted. A common statement from dissenters was ‘children can go elsewhere.’ The reality is they can’t.”
How to give children the freedom to play all across the city – not just in playgrounds
Play should be promoted in cities to bolster children’s right to play anywhere.

People who don't drive are causing too many cars to be on the road so we need to be punished by changing the structure of our democracy to allow someone to take away a minor piece of infrastructure that doesn't exist
Asked what problem he's trying to solve by considering strong mayor powers, Tim Houston says: "traffic," and specifically faults the one-waying of Morris Street.

We need to apply the brakes to avoid driving off a cliff, but that'll be a sudden jolt so we don't want to go crazy and brake quite yet
Cuttell asked how we're gonna have enough money because there's a lot of needed money, and not a lot of money going in to the reserve funds.

Staff say we can raise taxes or what have you, but it'd be a large increase due to the unsustainability of Halifax, so we didn't want to go crazy to start

So in my previous thing where I said maybe Hendsbee didn't hear the person talking about having someone die in the arms in a painted bike lane, I guess I underestimated the possibility that Hendsbee loves brutal killings

As Hackney’s Cabinet Member for Transport, I delivered the largest number of LTNs in the U.K.

In return, I was abandoned by my colleagues, got deaths threats, and received the largest number of complaints of any Cllr in the U.K in 2020.

It was worth it.
