The diplomatic "achievement" of the ceasefire was to recalibrate the tempo of the genocide sufficiently to get it off the front pages and the news bulletins, thus alleviating the political pressure on Israel's western accomplices.

Very cool! First ‘Good Shepherd’ type fresco found outside of Rome. Always interesting to see how depictions of Jesus have changed over time. Also interesting how modern biblical illustrations create a false view of the period - Jesus probably wore a tunic with clavii, not a flowing white robe!

We're used to seeing ancient Greek funerary stelae with gorgeous carved reliefs. However, during the Hellenistic era - particularly in Cyprus - steles were painted with the images of the deceased instead of carved. This pedimented stele shows a painted image of a youth holding a bird. 🏺 1/

Archaeologists have uncovered a Roman merchant vessel shipwreck from around ca. 320 CE near Mallorca. It was carrying olive oil, wine, and garum, “two leather shoes, a carpenter’s drill likely used for onboard repairs, and an oil lamp … Some amphorae, however, bear early Christian monograms.”

increasingly toying with the idea that this is the root of all "rule of law" issues. A democratic theory of the rule of law should begin with the idea that the rule of law emerges from the average citizen's lived experience. And that experience today is being ruthlessly ripped off at all times.
I can’t say it enough: U.S. culture is scam culture. It pervades everything we do. We don’t notice it because it’s the water we swim in. A party would do well to remind everybody how awful this is and propose to fix it.

Based Trad guys don’t know history obviously but even the idea of national languages is relatively recent - in France at the revolution only half the population spoke French. The HRE had many languages. In Ancient Rome at the bare minimum an aristocrat had to be bilingual
Vance says it is "totally reasonable and acceptable" for people to not want to live next door to people who speak a different language than they do

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Nobody can know everything, let alone everything by their own research. We always rely on experts to navigate our complex world. The question is whether we pick credentialed and experienced people or internet demagogues and grifters.
