An undeniably emotional experience seeing the other half of the ‘peacock room’ in Oplontis being excavated and meeting their counterparts: the two peahens that graced the facing wall. What a delightfully playful idea by the artist.
Compliments to my colleagues, excavators & conservators. Spectacular

Yet another crucial point: the vast majority of the world’s historical archives have not been digitized and are thus totally invisible to LLMs/AI.

bsky.app/profile/jcte...
it's literally impossible for an LLM to do a historian's job

it's not even LLMs sucking it's that they need data input to do anything and where's that data supposed to be coming from without historians

never met a computer that can dig through a thousand year old book in a library

“Four of my children just evaporated,” Badran said, holding back tears. “I looked for them a million times. Not a piece was left. Where did they go?”

There are no words to adequately describe the evil here.
Israel used weapons in Gaza that made thousands of Palestinians evaporate
US-made thermal weapons burning at 3,500C caused 2,842 people to "evaporate" in Gaza, Al Jazeera investigation finds.

The U.S. currently has more prisoners and a more sophisticated system of concentration camps than Nazi Germany had on the eve of World War II in 1939
ICE has now spent over half a BILLION dollars just on purchasing warehouses around the country to convert into detention camps.

If these mega-camps are utilized to the full capacity ICE intends, they'll be the largest prisons in the country, with little real oversight. www.ajc.com/politics/202...
ICE to begin detaining immigrants inside Social Circle warehouse in April
Homeland Security plans to build warehouse detention facilities in other cities being met with opposition.

Democratizing the arts looks like universal income, low-barrier grants for both emerging and working artists, well-funded municipal arts & recreation programs, vibrant third spaces, and a well-funded public school system with progressive curriculum.

Not a free pass for corporate-owned slop engines.
Every instance of "AI democratizes the arts, you're classist and ableist and a gatekeeper for trying to stop it" is a slap in the face to the literally centuries of poor, disabled people making art on the margins and a crass lie in service of a machine that strips down and regurgitates dreams

Dinosaurs remain cool as hell - this iguanodontian was basically a big porcupine!?
Really taken with Haolong dongi, out today from Jiandong Huang, Pascal Godefroit and team. Just submitted news article on it. An iguanodontian with abundant hollow spikes across the neck and body, projecting from among conventional basement scales, and with rows of plate-like scales along the tail.

A Corinthian delight: three examples of ancient caricatures. The pyxis at the top shows a child-like Herakles drawing water from a fountain. On the lower left, a kylix depicting a woman playing the usually all-male drinking game kottabos. On the lower right, Artemis and her curious dog. 🏺 1/

ICE has now carried out two summary executions of innocent people in the streets of an American city.

If you work for ICE, there's no denying that's the mission you're supporting now. You don't get to claim in one year or ten or twenty that you didn't know what ICE was doing. You're complicit.

This one was so powerful, I felt like I’d been slapped in the face. I’d known that the Washingtons owned slaves, but this brought it out of an abstract idea, to instead seeing a young woman who was forced to always sleep on a rug like a dog at the foot of Martha Washington’s bed, ready to serve.

My problem with this take is two fold: 1. The indigenous populations were not immigrants and nation of immigrants rhetoric excludes them and their genocide (intentionally or not). 2. It keeps the framing on immigration. What is actually good is the multiculturalism, not that people weren't born here
I absolutely believe 7th grade civics-class ideas about America as a nation of immigrants and free people

Haven’t seen much noise around the classics bluesky accounts about this, but archaeologists have finally found the basilica Vitruvius designed in Fano! It seems to match his description perfectly. Pretty big discovery! They’ve been looking for it for centuries www.reuters.com/science/ital...
