Curious! Also because hooded cloaks were actually fairly common in the Celtic regions during the Roman period, being considered a distinctive Celtic garb. Interesting that it seems to have disappeared then? There was even a cult of hooded spirits (genii cuccullati)

It’s been a year that this has been sitting around, but I decided to pick it back up on my rare moments of free time. Still a WIP - who can guess what shipwreck this is based on?

And here is a screenshot from a Blender mockup I did of the seating arrangement. The lowest rower is sitting on the crossbeam, the middle rower on that elevated central structure, and the top rower on a seat cantilevered out from the side of the ship.

Instead of having the large opening, I made the oarports large enough to accomodate the full movement of the oar. This is the main issue with this reconstruction- but it may also explain the structure shown in the middle in the Cyrene victory monument, a seat for the middle file of rowers.

A possible solution is in a reconstruction of the Erment warship model by Coates, published in Morrison’s “Greek and Roman Oared Warships 399-30BC”. Here the top and bottom rows are roughly aligned, and the middle row is offset towards the center of the ship. The oar goes through a large opening.

The challenge is that the oar system developed for Olympias by Coates and Murray requires the sloping of the hull to shift the oarsmen over so each man has equal length oars. Oarboxes, however, tend to have flat vertical surfaces. (Olympias cross section by Coates)

Haven’t posted any personal art in a while! Every once in awhile I get seized with the need to figure out a trireme from the 3rd C BCE, with the constraints of it being build around one of the Egadi rams (in this case Egadi 4), and to have a oarbox with all three rows of oarports in it.
