I enjoyed writing this for Foreign Affairs on why the US Military’s most serious Chinese capability problems in the Indo-Pacific cannot be solved with “cheap massed drones”:

It needed to be said. This is definitely a familiar story.
Ukraine may be repeating a costly mistake in Pokrovsk.

It’s a recurring pattern, seen for example in Vuhledar and Kursk – a reluctance to conduct a controlled, militarily justified withdrawal from a threatened salient when the situation no longer favors the defender. 1/

Well that’s a first (as far as I’m aware at least). A Ukrainian FPV successfully taking out a Russian Mi-8/17 helicopter. Looks opportunistic - FPV looking for targets on the road and reacts rapidly and with impressive pilot skill to seeing the helicopter rapidly approaching…
The Ukrainian military says it has destroyed a Russian Mi-28 helicopter with an FPV drone. Video from the drone shows it approach the aircraft almost head on until the instant it presumably impacts. Video shot from another drone shows the helicopter crash in flames.

Drones are changing war.

Sink the Baltic fleet, take Kaliningrad and then claim it was an accident due to Ukrainian EW interference.
It probably is incompetence, but we should sink a Russian frigate anyway to send a message.

Shaky Israel-Iran ceasefire points to unfinished business

My new analysis of the 12-day war, and why it may well be the beginning of a new and more dangerous phase of the Israel-Iran conflict, rather than the end.

Another case study in the fallacy of ‘transparent battlefields’. This is a good examination of some of the reasons why Israel achieved surprise against Iran last week. www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-at...
By fusing intelligence and special operations, Israel’s strikes on Iran are a lesson in strategic surprise

While Western tankies desperately try to equate 🇮🇱 with 🇷🇺🗑️, my friends in 🇮🇷 are cheering every successful strike against nuclear facilities, military bases, and the woman-hating, murderous IRGC leadership. Thankfully, neither 🇮🇱 nor the 🇮🇷 opposition care about tankie sensitivities 🤗♥️ #FreeIran

Two takeaways from Iran’s retaliatory strikes so far.

1. The ballistic missile strikes have been largely symbolic in nature targeting symbols of Israel’s military power (Ministry of Defence) rather than Israel’s ability to continue its air campaign against Israel.

🧵 I’ve talked a lot about disordered discourse, conspiracies, polarisation, denialism. But maybe the better question is: why does this keep happening? Why does our shared reality keep fracturing? What are the drivers I talk about as a dimension of disordered discourse?
