“Trans dignity is a losing issue for Democrats, Palestine freedom is a losing issue, the dignity of the homeless and immigrants is a losing issue.”

I do not fucking care! Fight for it anyway or give up. What else are we fighting for if not?

For some reason, I keep thinking about how the Emperor Tiberius (the emperor who crucified Jesus) renamed the Sea of Galilee "Lake Tiberias" after himself as part of his brutal repression of the Jews.

Renaming things is a powerful form of colonization and oppression of subject populations.

Fuck this hurts…
In a new lawsuit filed against Trump by state AGs, a family with a trans kid shares she died by suicide last month citing fears Trump would deny her access to gender-affirming care. "Her parents have expressed fear...that what happened to their daughter does not happen to other children."

really good 🧵 beneath the quote

it's about (for me) employing a shared language to challenge values and assumptions, and to communicate to observers that there is more to this tradition and faith system that nationalism cannot conquer
Just to say, lefty Christians don't quote the Bible back at the right wingers because we can't believe that conservative Christians exist or whatever. Its a rhetorical device more than a "no true scottsman" thing

There is a relative silence among the commentariat in the face of Trump's anti-transgender EOs because there is no amount of throat-clearing over trans athletes or hand-waving over UK medical reviews that can obscure the hatred and animosity of Trump himself. They have nothing to hide behind.

pivoting the plan for the teen class this Sunday to talk about Current Events, which makes me nervous independent of *which* Events; political abstention is a core part of this denomination's heritage

Let me tell you this now, and be really clear on it - as a trans person and a Christian I see my transness as a gift from God, and my transition as a fundamental calling from God. When trans Christians die because of transphobia? As far as I'm concerned, that's martyrdom. There's no diminishing it.

i spend a lot less time on traditional social media these days; the Death of Twitter broke all my habits and I haven't managed to form new ones yet

but! something i have really enjoyed (and, honestly, needed) over the past year is Les Mis Letters, a chapter-a-day book club devoted to Les Misérables

Don't get me wrong. I love my God, though I don't always understand Him or agree. Like, do we really need the droughts? And the floods? And the plagues? And the earthquakes? And the universal suffering and—see?

watching Michael Shur's A Man on the Inside, on the heels of a rewatch of The Good Place

the good place was enough time with the people we love; A Man on the Inside knows most of us simply won't get enough jeremy bearimies, but echoes I Saw the TV Glow's call: there is, if we're willing, still time

yeah like. church specifically for folks in our shoes is sometimes impossibly difficult for obvious reasons, i promise i know this

but being a part of *something* that makes you invest in people different from you, and makes them invest in you in turn, might be the only way out of this labyrinth
I am always wondering how closely connected my renewed civic investment in my community and starting to attend a church semi-regularly are. Probably quite a bit!

What’s more, my mere presence there means a lot of people there “know” a trans person, which has been a real moderating influence!
Hard to deny that the collapse of civic life is connected to:
1) the collapse of religious involvement among younger generations
2) the total collapse of local and regional news organizations.

Everyone wants to solve the problem without reversing these two changes, but that's very hard.
