The hubris the Trump admin is demonstrating right now is unlike anything I’ve seen in my adult life. It’s surprising, for me. This is unlike even the worst of the War on Terror.

But I guess this is what a declining superpower with sclerotic institutions and leader does.
Escalation on Iran, Trump warnings

• Trump,Rubio,Hegseth voice support
• WSJ: US mulling aerial strikes
• Protests spread + riots
• Video surfacing of bodies in hospital
• Khamenei defiant
• Israel on alert
• Oman FM in Iran

okay so they literally expect to run another country by truth social post, I can’t see any way this could possibly go wrong
A former staffer said that U.S. officials would not be performing a formal occupation like in Iraq. “We’re going to tell them: ‘Hey, this is what you have to do in order for there not to be another strike. That’s what [Trump] sees as running the country.” www.washingtonpost.com/national-sec...
Rubio takes on most challenging role yet: Viceroy of Venezuela
The top U.S. diplomat has pushed for regime change for over a decade. Now the hard part begins.

So, Venezuela is being justified in the same grounds as Vietnam, in Rubio’s mind.

That’s reassuring.
I pressed Rubio on whether he and Hegseth lied to Congress when promising to seek congressional approval before attacking Venezuela. This was his response:

It’s the Banana Wars. Part Deux.
Trump: "We're going to have our very large United States oil companies go in, spend billions of dollars, fix the badly broken infrastructure and start making money for the country. And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack if we need to do so."

I nominate Paul Bremer to ‘run’ Venezuela.

He’s got the experience necessary for the job.
January 3, 2026 at 6:35 PM
So Venezuela was going to attack the US, or the people coming to arrest Maduro? If it’s the latter, isn’t this entire argument a tautology?
Sen Mike Lee with the first account I’ve seen of the Admin’s legal theory for the strikes. On the domestic law side — something like: Art II law enforcement power to capture Maduro (by invading his own country) combined with Art II power to protect those personnel executing the warrant.
January 3, 2026 at 1:33 PM
Well some foreign leaders, at least.

Perhaps a dumb set of questions, how do US courts have jurisdiction over Maduro? What crimes has he committed in the US? And what’s the standard for evidence?
Marco Rubio is reportedly saying Maduro will stand trial in US courts.

Which means it’s now the US administration’s position that US courts can hold foreign presidents, but not the US president, accountable for crimes.

The Trump 2.0 National Security Strategy is a banger. There is a Trump corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. So, US colonialism is back, but it's non-interventionist colonialism?

The war in Ukraine should end as soon as possible. Most likely via a negotiated settlement. But arguing Ukraine should accept a peace deal that solely benefits Russia is absurd. It ignore Ukrainian & European security concerns.

Also, how is Ukraine a “US War?”

I'm pretty sure 5 F-35s just flew over DC. At least that is what I saw and heard from my office window. Please correct me if it's the wrong airframe.

Assuming they were F-35s, how likely is it that Trump is showing off his new war machines for MBS?

Gaza is stuck in a no-man’s land of peace and war.

Israel occupies 53% of the Strip. If any development happens it seems increasingly likely it will only occur in Israeli controlled areas. Because there has been no progress on Trump’s nebulous peace plan.

It will be an abdication of any of its remaining legitimacy.

That this is a scoop, and that there is likely to be little or less accountability for monstrous IDF war crimes, is a sad and preposterous commentary on US policy and on the Biden and Trump administrations.
SCOOP: A classified U.S. report finds a backlog of "hundreds" of possible Israeli human rights violations in Gaza that will take "years" to review, raising doubts about future accountability.
