Today in life under competitive authoritarianism

Again, you don’t have to believe me. You can just listen to the guy who literally invented the concept:

Have same drawer. Always a source of emotional sustenance.
I got an email yesterday from a student saying that I “manage to walk the tightrope of not imposing normative views while also maintaining moral clarity” and I’m printing that out on Monday to live in my nice things people have said drawer forever and ever.

One of my tasks this week has been compiling statements of small businesses who chose to close on Jan. 23 in solidarity with the General Strike. Here are my take-aways after reading more than 1000 of these statements from 79 cities and towns across Minnesota:

Maybe this spring there will be a national hiking day in memory of Alex Pretti.

You can complain about Schumer and Jeffries and the way they have utterly failed to meet the moment, but credit, too, to New York for providing two of the most insightful, outspoken pols of our day, Mamdani and AOC.
Mamdani: "To first take a moment about Mpls. It is horrific what we have seen there. And I think that there are too many Americans who are being asked to not believe their own eyes, not believe their own ears, not believe their own realities." (This interview was conducted before Pretti killing)

The media should cover sport the way they cover the state murder of civilians:

‘Jannik Sinner appeared to win the French Open yesterday after what supporters say was a comeback from being two sets down.’

Will candidates commit to
1. investigate and prosecute criminal misconduct by ICE and others
2. abolish ICE.
3. establish Federal fund to compensate 1000s of people whose constitutional rights have been violated
4. build national memorial to remember the brave people killed by ICE

The left didn’t make the men you ordered to occupy the city for no reason shoot a man in the back. The left didn’t tell a bunch of masked armed yahoos that they had “total immunity” and you would let them get away with murder if it came to that.

This mirrors the analysis of the vast majority of historians and political scientists who have studied authoritarianism elsewhere. Successful authoritarians still need to look at polls. They still worry about popular opinion.

Trump has authoritarian ambitions; he doesn't have the skills.
i think they are bad consolidating authoritarianism choices because effective consolidation involves carrots as well as (secret) sticks. this administration is doing the opposite. no carrots whatsoever and ostentatious public violence against members of the dominant racial/ethnic/religious group
Definitely. What my paranoia forces me to ask, "Are these bad political choices but good consolidating authoritarian choices?"

Because the media, as it has been lubricated for fascists' pleasure, is in the business of rewarding authoritarianism.

Government agents committed a barbaric, extrajudicial killing on an American street in front of witnesses whom they also harmed.

WHERE ARE OUR LEADERS? Why aren’t they standing, physically, w/ the brave citizens of Minneapolis? Any city may be next. Leaders should lead. At least follow the brave.

for sure, but this obviously goes well beyond the ICE murderer who pulled the trigger.

there is culpability all the way to the white house. and the culture of elite impunity in this country has to end now.
I told the White House the state must lead the investigation.

Let state investigators secure justice. As we process the scene, stay peaceful and give them space.

The State has the personnel to keep people safe – federal agents must not obstruct our ability to do so.

I just spoke with the White House after another horrific shooting by federal agents this morning. Minnesota has had it. This is sickening.

The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.

Amazing analysis
AOC: This is quite a bit of market concentration. Agreed?

CVS HEALTH CHAIR DAVID JOYNER: No. I'd suggest it's a model that works well for the consumer

AOC: It works well for CVS. Health insurance gets a cut, pharmacy benefit manager gets one, drug manufacturer gets one, & the patient gets screwed

Hey, @uconn.bsky.social, can we discuss the minimum requirements for you to call something a "Town Hall"? This doesn't cut it:
