Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.”

A no less vital admonition that deserves attn:

STAND OUT

“...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

It’s the trans day of remembrance. It’s definitely my least favorite queer “celebration” day, but it is a good reminder to myself that I am a hell lot older than I ever expected to be. And not everyone gets to get there, so it’s a privilege to have survived this long.

thinking about how many characters in the Lord of the Rings ultimately succeed by simply plodding on despite a loss of hope. weighed down by despair and yet not fully drowned. trudging towards the light with their last ounce of strength and will. and in the end, it is enough.

I have always been someone who needs to plan my next steps when under pressure. So a short list of things I plan to do over the next few days:
- Apply for a passport
- Have a frank discussion with my medical team about continued access to hormones

Damn me and my curiosity during my usual 2am wake up. I need to apply for my passport in the next few days.

Unoriginal observation, but I feel like people have genuinely forgotten how to have fun with games. Not everything needs to be groundbreaking or life-changing. Not everything needs to raise the bar.

Just...maybe stop being angry for a day.

I’m gonna be on a panel at PAX! It’s called “Fantasy and Escapism Aren’t Always Bad” about how games can be healthy places for fantasy and how this can help us be happier

Come see it on Friday at 3pm in the Oriole theater 💖

Will you be at PAX West??

Do you want to see me, @stcymsn.bsky.social, Tarn Adams of Dwarf Fortress, and Ryan Clark of Brace Yourself Games discuss the famously uncontroversial topic of procedural generation in games?

In an impossibly cool move, Joe Murray, creator of Rocko's Modern Life, has noticed his book about creating animation is out of print and massively over-priced on the second hand market.

So he's put it on his site for free.

Love being rear ended by a young medical sales rep in an Audi while at a stoplight and literally everyone is stopped. Apparently she thought the light was green 🙃 I’m fine but man. I just got my car back from it being hit by a tree.

Last post was definitely a dig at my former boss and his “VR is an empathy machine “ TED talk lol

Such a problem in VR too. The attempts to “put yourself in someone else’s shoes” are common and it feels gross that folks pat themselves on the back feeling like they finally know how racism, poverty, or queerness feels because “VR is so powerful”
There is a whole chapter in my book Empathy Engines about how this is a bad and stupid idea and the powerful difference between autobiographical games that speak to similar people (good) and games to “teach empathy” for others’ plights (problematic)
“We should gamify their symptoms!”

If you gamify my disability you will not see god!
