Shared Fantasy, the first sociological monograph about roleplaying games, is about a period when established players are dealing with a new wave of younger players with different priorities. The period is 1978.
A game where you can do anything and they’re mad that people are doing anything.

Only one volume left to go! Imagine telling someone this back in 1989, when Viz first tried releasing the Fist manga.

Or in the mid-90s, when Viz tried for a second time.

Or in the early 00s, when Gutsoon tried for a third time.

Man, if only more manga were given this many tries in English...

Oh dang, I didn't notice the news until now, but Depersonalization - a big Chinese indie hybrid RPG based on tabletop Call of Cthulhu - got its english translation overhaul a couple weeks back.

I'd been holding off on playing it because I'd heard the initial translation was pretty wonky.

I've only got the first of those, but I want to read more.
Anyone who wants to make a hot take on either WWII, Japan, and/or the use of nuclear weapons in war needs to read these four volumes of SHOWA: A HISTORY OF JAPAN. No one who has not read them is allowed to have an opinion.

I've been shouting about this game since the day it came out. Genuinely one of the best side-scrolling brawlers EVER. Incredible depth means that even on the ultra-highest difficulty (where every enemy moves like a hummingbird and stings like a truck) it's possible to 1cc it consistently.
INCOMING CANON FIRE!

Our beat em up exploration continues with FIGHT'N RAGE!

With a fetishistic love for the arcade aesthetic, and deep mechanics inspired by everything from Streets of Rage 3 to Third Strike, it's easily the best brawler of the decade.

New Review: Mitsuteru Yokoyama's Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Part 1)

The first TV anime adaptation of Romance was actually an adaptation of an adaptation, as it was based on Mitsuteru Yokoyama's 60-volume magnum opus

Alright, it's looking like the ultimate answer to "does Hundred Line really have 100 distinct endings?" is "mostly true", because the game's script is indeed a giant monster of very different routes and scenarios.

The review consensus is positive too, with a few rather minor caveats.

Saw the whole thing now, it's a fantastic dive into the history of wargames/strategy games and how cultural changes affect how we "play" war as a society. Great work George!

It's outside of the scope of the video, but I want to add a fun trivia about when civilian units were added to wargames - 1/4
It's my biggest video yet: A 4,000 year-long 100-minute narrative about how real-life political history has shaped the underlying basic mechanisms of an entire genre of games we take for granted today.

I've deleted the Japan-releated comments, because I realized my own description was leaving out some nuances, even if it did contribute to making an often simplified comparison into a more complex one. I'll have to think about how to better present that information later.
