If you use GMail, AI (Gemini) was turned on yesterday by default and now scans all of your content for machine learning. To turn off, go to Settings>General and scroll down. Uncheck the box for "Smart features."

There's other "Smart" add-ons as well, but that's the one that reads your content.

I ended up watching this whole thing and really enjoying it. Lots of great points in here. And it also helped me put some vocabulary to why I enjoy the Avatar films so much and am always confused by people completely dismissing them. If you think that sounds crazy, watch the video!
I know this is making the rounds, but I found it super intriguing and it hits on some thoughts about the experience of watching "modern" films in comparison to films from the 70s, of which I've been watching many recently...

This video was surprisingly fun video with delightful animation. I especially like the message at the end. Embrace more old tech, go outside, see your friends. youtu.be/NBZv0_MImIY

"If you hate GenAI you're going to have to stop playing new games when they all start using it"

My brother in Christ, my backlog is literally thousands of games long. I have lifetimes worth of earlier titles to play, & I will gladly do that instead of boiling the oceans for a new CoD or whatever

Trying to measure coding productivity is, and always will be, a fool's errand.

Why? Because I can go for a walk then take a shower and have an idea, then write a single line of code that fixes everything I was working on.

Immense productivity, but by most metrics I didn't do anything at all.

New episode! On STS-102 we've got what looks like a pretty simple mission but all sorts of complexities abound. Let's just hope that we don't have to hit that ominous red button on the control stick!

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

This is especially true for medical care. Virtually any - any - type of cancer was a death sentence. The 5y survival rate for children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 1960 was roughly 14%. Today it is roughly 95%.
It is genuinely hard for most people to grasp how poor the past was.
