this isn't exactly right but not exactly wrong either. share of americans who live alone is at peak, but share of young americans living with "roommates" is *also* up. how is this possible? increases in both are offset by fewer married couples living together, since people get married later.
Okay I'm going to flag this not to dunk on Sandra but because I want to point that one major driver of increased housing costs is that young people today are MUCH more reluctant to have roommates than in the past. I personally know a number of folks who just refuse to consider it!
A loan and because I was a young woman my dad had to co-sign and the car was $2500. My apartment was $200, my share $100, heat and electric included. No IPhones, computers and other must have expensive tech. Once the gas went crazy high from .35 to over .52 sold the Mach and bought a VW bug.

this is my grandmother 100% (can you guess who the "grandson" is)
A key figure in US politics that I think a lot of European observers obsessed with MAGA voters haven't really got their heads around is your average boring middle class suburban voter who in the face of incomprehensible reactionary chaos hankers after a Normie Revolution.

This needs more attention: Zohran SPLIT the straights with Cuomo. ALL of his margin was from LGBTQ+ voters. Every Dem who ever said “we should abandon the transes” needs this shoved down their fucking throat with a ramrod.

I don't actually think this is true re the PMC but I do believe key thinkers on the Right believe this and it explains their behaviour
The right has correctly identified the professional-managerial class as the class with the most revolutionary potential in the current period and have directed all their energies to destroy it before it becomes aware of itself and its own power
it's utterly wild how the Heritage Foundation president talks about other people
if you found a guy talking like this outside, you'd probably call the cops

ime the idea of saving a much larger chunk of my money is just silly — mortgages in anywhere that i'd want to live are so expensive that even if i subtracted 100% of the enjoyable things from my monthly expenses i would struggle to accrue enough money for a down-payment, lot less afford retirement
“At the same time, more than half of Gen Z members say they are struggling to make ends meet, yet a majority buy themselves a small treat, such as a pastry, coffee, or sweet, at least once a week. That can lead to overspending…”

oh my god. this is crazy shit. it's insane insane that they are doing 2008 again with bonds backed by TECH COMPANY RENT PAYMENTS instead of subprime mortgage payment instruments.
quite literally everything i hear about the economics of this feels insane, especially given the big issue of the tools not doing what boosters say they will do. so many details make me feel very not good!

here it's basically impossible to prove AI use to the standards of the deans, so we need to just find reasons for giving really bad grades to the AI generated stuff. unfortunately, this means we have to be insane about citations and stuff, which is not a skill everybody got from their high school!
It is hard to overstate the stress produced by the incoherence of academic institutions pumping generative AI when they want to play business and then leaving instructors to deal with the results when they want to play school
Cheating with an LLM is the easiest thing in the world for a student to do, but it creates a massive, laborious headache for a prof, if you intend to take it seriously. There’s meetings, emails, discussions, moral dilemmas. It’s just incredibly burdensome, on top of everything else right now.

i've done a lottttt of mentoring for people applying to philosophy phd programs, so ive been involved people's "should i do a philosophy phd" questions very many times. one thing that's difficult is that no matter how hard you convey the questionable odds, everyone thinks they are built different.
Every time there is a major announcement of cuts to PhD programs at a major institution, it reactivates my own deep worry: to reduce or shutter doctoral programs endangers whole fields, and yet to bring young people into those fields, with no ability to provide jobs for their future, seems wrong.

was reading a bunch of wacky puritan names the other day, and i think we need to bring back naming your kid stuff like "Joy-in-sorrow [lastname]." we can leave out first names like "Humiliation" and such but "Run-not-from-love" is a great first name for a baby boy.

not really. why would i think it's just to enforce some super mysterious rules on people who couldn't reasonably be expected to know them? not trying to suggest it has never once happened and been the right thing to do, but it's definitely not a great policy.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

these people are straight up evil. pathetic little nazi fucks. the sad thing is: not that surprising to anyone who has been on a college campus recently. *of course* these are the guys running the young GOP stuff.

you know all those experiments where they put an electric plate between a mouse and what the mouse wants (food, water, baby, etc.) and the mouse eventually learns to give up and no longer try to get to the thing it wants. im doing that with my students and email.

my girlfriend is always shocked by my taste in men, which is probably most succinctly described with the phrase "the youtuber Big Joel is the single most attractive man i have ever seen"

hmm. i've made a lot of friends on social media. probably would've made a lot of friends if i was doing something else, though. not clear what lesson to take from this thought.

just was reminded of andrea long chu's "On Liking Women," and immediately reread it. still so good. i feel that she, of all the public intellectuals of the moment, really knows what the role of a public intellectual is --- to be more committed to truth than short-term political advantage.

putting on my contrarian hat: noah is sorta right. under conditions of fascist heterosexuality men are not supposed to "enjoy" sex, it is not supposed to be a source of pleasure or tenderness—these urges are supposed to be sublimated into the endless competition with other men for wealth and status.
Okay now we’re really poasting
