How much of the instructions you follow is up you you. Make a character the way the book says, or adjust things to make a grimoire as a prop for a character in a gaming group.

What I found so valuable about writing critically about media in my 20s is that it helped me SEE and unpack where it was problematic. It didn't mean I stopped loving it. When you hold every piece of media to impossible standard, you'll never love anything again. What a terrible world that would be

Being able to articulate WHY something works is, for me, even more important these days than identifying why it DOESN'T. This is a key we're losing in the hate watch/hate read culture promoted by algorithms. You either have to love all of something completely or hate all of something completely.
