2. We have a whole section on this in Chapter 14 of our online course thebullshitmachines.com.

The bottom line: an apology is a speech act, and a machine does not meet the felicity conditions (preparatory conditions and sincerity conditions, in particular) for the utterance to perform as intended.

Yes this is about Lyman. No, not the town in Ukraine.
I might as well go around saying UUs are the only true Christians because we long ago gave up on treating the Jesus stuff as Doctrine We All Believe and that’s the right thing to do and therefore everyone that still does creeds isn’t a Christian. 🤷‍♀️

The Americas see about 3% of global elevator installations as of 2020. The U.S. & Canada: even less.

But we've stuck with our own unique set of elevator codes, as if elevator companies still have no choice but to beat a path to our door.

Nope! "Everywhere else" is a bigger common market now.

Furthermore, Eastern Europe is real. It is not an abstraction to be used for showing your moral purity to other people who are only able to understand the actual real world history of regimes called “communist” through a parochial US lens. McCarthy was not a Romanian.

I’m blocking Ms “everyone outside the Ceauşescu fan club is a Nazi,” but for the record, it is not true that making fire departments buy smaller fire engines over the objection of a fire chief is impossible. I’m pretty sure Scott Wiener did it when he was supervisor.

And please, PLEASE let us not forget that time in 2023 when Karen Smith was elected President of the school board in Bucks County, Pa and swore her oath on a stack of banned books. The most gangsta oath ever! Just brilliant. www.edweek.org/leadership/t...
This School Board President Took Her Oath on a Stack of Contested Books. Here's Why

For crying out loud there’s a middle ground between refusing to admit sex hormones have any psychological effects and demonizing birth control.
Birth control pills are just hormones; estrogens and progestins, to be specific. Yes, hormone levels have psychological effects, but many things affect hormone levels. There’s nothing uniquely evil about hormones taken for birth control.

In the 1920s, the KKK circulated rumors that Catholics had amassed a huge arsenal of weapons and explosives and hidden them in the basements and sewers beneath the University of Notre Dame, in preparation for a Catholic takeover of the US.

Thinking about this today for no particular reason.

Medical news you can use: you get all sorts of case reports in the medical literature of “patient with odd orthorexic obsession develops strange nutrient deficiency.” If they catch it early enough, the treatment can be as simple as “eat a burrito from the truck in the parking lot.”

He was doing this shtick when he was a random Army officer assigned to wherever; Pete and Sean Parnell saw his poasting and liked it so much they had the Army reassign him to Sean's office in the Pentagon (ATSD(PA), the head Public Affairs shop) where apparently his job is now posting all day

one of the weirdest historiographical effects you can see is the plausibility shear when the criterion of embarrassment reverses polarity over the lifetime of a source

An analogue I’ve noticed between fundamentalist scriptural exegesis and jurispudential originalism as actually practiced in the wild: Both enable a kind of ventriloquism by assuming univocality in the texts they purport to interpret.

how on earth did this make it to a full roll out?
in my experience the phone app works *only* after 6-7 tries while my card sometimes takes 2-3 tries (usually card is fine, albeit slow). MTC will be hearing from me about this again, and hopefully from all of you too!

IIUC one of the necessary conditions for Rome's victory over the successor states and Carthage was its deep manpower reserves, which in turn were due to Roman citizenship being open to anyone, contra the closed model of e.g. the Greek polis.

In other words, Rome won because of wokeness?

How was the play?
During one interview, the student admitted that she merely looked at the topic and then rushed together a response based on her personal feelings regarding a tangential issue that was the main thesis of the assigned article, because she was in a hurry to go see a play that evening with her friend.
