The irony of people complaining on _social media_ about the potential civil rights violations of digital ID.

That square chunk of metal and glass and plastic you carry round and interact with all day? It knows ALL your secrets and sends them all to corporations run by far right techbros.

Look you just have to make the cool weird shit that excites you. You must. In this world besieged by bland, scrubbed boring, computer slop, you must. Make the thing you’re embarrassed to make, the thing that feels “too much” because otherwise we get drowned in a sea of cowardly work made by a button

If I were Simon Jenkins, I would avoid the subject of it who exactly deserves their huge salary like the plague.

Some Friday night reading: what is a wargame for, why Chain of Command does it well, and what I'd change for CoCv2:

Can anyone tell me why specifically the third recommendation in my Youtube sidebar is now always some bullshit with about three views?

Very much this. To explain it all you only need the combination:

- Trump doesn't understand trade and thinks tariffs are great
- He hates admitting he's ever wrong no matter the evidence
- the people around him are rationally terrified and know that he'll see contradiction as disloyalty
While I see all your conspiracy theories I regret to inform you that the horrible truth is that an old man with a tariff obsession has been given almost unlimited power in the world's richest country.

Hate to be millennial about it all but it is just mental that my whole working life has just been a series of recessions and “economic shocks”, underpinned by stagnant wages

We are at the ‘pre-orders are a really useful signal to retailers’ stage now.
So, I’d appreciate that…
Exciting news for me. Pre-orders are open.

Announcing platforms three minutes before a train is due to depart is a fucking stupid way to run a railway, Euston!

Donald Trump says he wanted to take back the Panama Canal. It's a preposterous idea. But I have an even more preposterous Panama Canal-related idea I wanted to share with you. More here: edconway.substack.com/p/time-to-ta...
Time to talk about the Panama Canal
Apparently Donald Trump wants to bring it back under American control. Here's a crazier idea

Lard Mag is here! And it contains an article on using 28mm sailing ships in your games of Sharp Practice, written by an anonymous lunatic 👀

Appreciate this may not be a universally popular opinion but the less you treat BlueSky as a crusade or cause, and the more you position it as simply a superior user experience with a better governance approach, the more sustainable the growth will be.

The 'stay on X to fight' really shows the limitations of the 'Nazi bar' analogy. If your local bar becomes a Nazi hangout, 'just turn up in large numbers and be normal' is actually an option (see, for instance, the UK counterprotests). You can't fight an owner by using their product!
Agree with this. No doubt some are sincere in wanting to stay on X/Twitter to fight, but with the best will in the world I think that won’t work. You’re just helping to normalise what is now a far right disinformation site, & have we really not learned yet that it’s pointless to debate trolls?
And though I see the force of “take them on on their own turf” it’s also critical to break the coordination problem that underpins X’s position. Debating on X strengthens X. See open.substack.com/pub/georgepe...

I've reached a bit of a milestone with this 28mm frigate, which I'm building for the game @duncanwgaming.bsky.social and I are putting on for Herts of Lard in March; so far it's all been put together dry, but now all the frames and structural work for the hull are done!
February 20, 2024 at 10:02 PM
Working up a design for a large frigate from a lines plan of the original, because @duncanwgaming.bsky.social and I are apparently not capable of doing a sensible sort of game!

Footsore Miniatures very kindly gave us some figures to give away at the inaugural To The Strongest doubles tournament, so I thought it only fair to bump him to the top of the painting queue! Lovely sculpt and a near-flawless casting.

Do you play To The Strongest, and could you be in London this Saturday? If so, we're looking for a ringer to play in our TTS doubles tournament and replace a dropout. We can provide an army and a partner for you!

Finished rebasing some 90-odd hoplites onto multibases for To The Strongest! An army is never done, but this should be plenty for the forseeable future.

There are still a handful of places left for my club's inaugural To The Strongest! doubles tournament on the 25th; it'll be a very casual one so perfect if you've not played in a TTS competition before!
