Seattle is, of course, cloudy today but that won't stop Tahoma from peeking through.

Earlier this year, HHS secretary RFK Jr. predicted that, "By September, we will know what has caused the autism epidemic and we'll be able to eliminate those exposures." Scientists have been researc

As an archivist, this keeps me up.
LINK ROT: 38% webpages that existed in 2013 were no longer available 10 years later.

Even among pages that existed in 2021, 22% no longer accessible just two years later. This is often because individual page was deleted or removed on otherwise functional website.

Many implications for knowledge 🧪

I have written and deleted a lot of posts but I keep thinking about how the brutal assassination of Minnesota State senator Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog Gilbert in June did not prompt this same level of calls for empathy, sympathy, and flags at half-mast.

Y’all don’t hate white supremacy enough for me.

You’ll befriend it, have beers with it, even call it a difference of opinion…you’ll do everything but eradicate it.

White supremacy is not a stance. It is not a position. It is poison. And you’d rather be sick than keep your Black friends safe.

As someone on a county library board: we track checkouts, we track event attendance, hell we track door counts. Just visit your local library and show them some love
Hey, as a librarian I need to tell you:

Our funding depends on usage.

So go ahead and check out that book even if you don't think you'll finish it. No one will know. Check out that DVD even though you might not like it. Get ambitious in your quest for knowledge.

Relatedly, if you haven't been in an archives you have no idea just how much historical material is not online, not even a digital record of it. An LLM cannot research data it doesn't have. It can't even extrapolate where to find that material.

ON TOP of the ethical reasons to not use AI, it's also
1) bad at what it does
2) literally makes you stupider
3) has HUGE environmental costs: every search is equivalent to pouring out an entire bottle of water. It's not worth it to generate a cutesy emoji or have it write an error-riddled draft.
AI was trained on my books (without my permission and against my will) so this annoys me. I never use AI. Not for research, not for images, not for writing. AI used me.
I keep seeing reports of non-AI users being told that an AI detector has dubbed their work AI generated, and it makes me insane because:
1) AI detection tools *are themselves AI* and thus entirely bullshit; and
2) if an AI was trained on your works, of COURSE it’ll flag you as sounding “like” AI!
