The impact to USGS looks utterly devastating. And everyone is depressed. But we're all still here. Nevertheless, we persist...

A popular podcaster invoked dead children to defend himself, in a vile non-sequitur, from criticism for singling out a random woman for a harassment mob because she made an anodyne post disagreeing with him after he continually misrepresented another woman who is harassed and pressured online.

It's sooo depressing remembering that a problem with the bad faith Executive branch is that what they are executing are ultimately shitty laws
That sucks. This case is genuinely hard. First, the United States probably has a legal right to resume deportation proceedings against Abrego Garcia, even though it probably would never have done so if it weren't trying to save face publicly over its own fuck-up. She knows she can't get in the way.

The choices of people tweeting pigs pooping on their own balls at you are beyond reproach. If you don't want to participate or be bullied into participating with things that make you uncomfortable and talk openly about why you feel that way, you're the same as David Brooks
“Make it okay”? Debate over Israel-Palestine has almost exclusively centered on the alleged mistakes of protestors

What do you think is more likely, that Musk’s Nazi robot has made new discoveries in materials science or that Musk can’t tell when he’s being told scientific-sounding gibberish?

The sheer balls... This wasn't a post about Palestine. It's a post about people wanting her to talk about Palestine. The irony is rich, if all that matters is her stance & public statement ("it's a genocide"), why do people care about the rest? Because they're upset about how she talks about them
This is extremely disappointing. When you've just admitted that a genocide is happening, it's bizarre to spend the rest of your post criticizing the manners and motives of the people trying to stop it.

Maybe it feels like you worked faster if what you ended up doing was less, easier, or less focused work?

My experience using AI to do (very low skill level) coding is still that I'd rather just ask for assistance from a person who knows what they're doing
metr.org METR @metr.org · Jul 10
We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers.

The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.

Natalie's thoughts usually align so much with my own that I sometimes question myself, but her vid on New Atheism revealed how much her formative years mirrored mine at the same time period
They deleted it (they made a terrible mistake of actually allowing people to read it instead of getting mad about it without having read it) but here it is:

The fake discourse about Mamdami is predicated upon the assumption that clicking anything that says "Black" is the DEI cheat code for automatic success.

Conveniently omitted is how (1) that's not how DEI worked; (2) he put the best he could given the form; and (3) he didn't get in anyway.
But he did not "select 'Black/African American'." He selected "Black *or* African American" AND "Asian" AND wrote in "Ugandan." He literally told them all he could about his true "ethnicity/race," which is literally what they asked for on the form.

I feel like the drooling idiot half of that normal curve meme re: the NYT mamdani hit piece. There are all these threads about the fascinating nuances in Indian diaspora and meanwhile my response was like, "uh he's American, born in Africa, to Asian heritage, which is what he said"

The reason for this is that a lot of Democrats are black

Hence, they must call Republicans "sir," while Republicans are at perfect liberty to call them "boy"
The media made a HUGE deal out of "basket of deplorables" and "cling to their guns or religion."

But, of course, it will totally ignore Trump saying he hates Democrats: "I hate them. I believe they hate their country."
in addition to his "shylocks" comment, i can't imagine the media backlash if Biden said anything like from this screenshot - that he "hates Republicans" - and i'm also tired of having this "IMAGINE IF BIDEN!" thought experiment but it's just a constant reminder of the double standards

I am grieving the barbarism that is going to unfurl from all this. People are going to die. Livelihoods gone. All to feed a corrupt kleptocracy.

I see every day up close how different it is from the first time around. There are no guardrails. A disaster. I’m sorry we have to live through this.

This is one of the most depressing news stories I’ve ever read. Not shocking or confronting. Just depressing.

It’s simply a journalist speaking to ICE applicants.

Extremely dark that the entire U.S. government is lying down to be steamrolled by something called the Trump agenda for fear of some force called "Donald Trump" while the actual Donald Trump has no idea what's happening
Helluva @notusreports.bsky.social scoop showing that Trump has no idea what's in his budget bill. Seems like something that ought to get a lot more attention.

Also this: a republican house member actually admits that they are attacking medicaid. Yes, they are.
