The early days of the internet poisoned a whole bunch of brains of people my age +/- 10 yrs into thinking news and movies and music could be, should be, must be free at point of consumption.
It looks like “news shouldn’t have paywalls“ discourse is starting again.

-Banner ads don’t cover costs, and you block them
-Native ads are coercive
-Billionaires buying papers backfired
-Event driven funding doesn’t scale
-Newsletters are narrow and lack accountability infrastructure

What do you mean I have to watch screeners of great new movies? I wanna watch mediocre comedies of the early aughts!

Who in the world believes that online instantaneous sports gambling from your phone advertised on every sporting event at all times is a good idea, aside from the corporations making money from it and the politicians they spread it around to?
Jesus Christ.

I have no problem with a profile of a disgraced journalist. I do have a problem with the tone of the profile not being "Look at this disgraced journalist. She did a bad thing and deserved to lose her position and prestige."

And people say this admin isn't creating jobs. I give you the local tear gas forecast beat!
Chicago may experience less tear gas use as Operation Midway Blitz winds down. Cold and wet weather reduce effectiveness, while wind adds unpredictability.
Wind, cold temps can change the impact of tear gas and pepper balls, experts say

So frustrating when the production company behind a visually beautiful film provides the absolute most bland and uninteresting still photos to illustrate a review with. Help me help you!

Dear FYC email. I'd like nothing more than to give Kathryn Bigelow awards. Can I retroactively give her them for STRANGE DAYS? NEAR DARK? Hell, BLUE STEEL?

The weirdest thing about this discourse is that states with shorter school closures have the same amount of learning loss! I keep waiting for all the punditry on this to catch up with basic facts
Every time Covid and learning loss hits the news, people act like the only factor is folk staying home and learning online, rather than… Living through a global mass death event.
