“If you care about the bottom line, budgets & taxes, then you should care about urban biking, because it’s a money saver. It’s ironic when so-called fiscal conservatives attack biking, when their efforts just show a lack of understanding of math.” My interview with @modacitylife.com #CityMakingMath
Opinion: Why more urban cycling saves everyone money | Urbanized
The resulting benefits of a ‘car-less’ household are myriad, but few are as quantifiable as the money most people sink into a depreciating asset that sits unused for 95% of the time.

There's the heinousness, then there's also the vile opportunism. These guys are really going for America's Most Hated, aren't they?
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

“A politician must earn my vote” is really the ultimate triumph of consumerism.

No conception that voting is a collective power. Just an empty belief that a vote is a type of currency that one uses to purchase a politician.

The leaders of the US auto industry had a difficult path towards relevancy, only by leaning on the support of Biden's IRA. They've decided to throw that away, juice some ICE profits for a few more years, and let their successors deal with the incipient crisis of global uncompetitiveness

@governorferguson.bsky.social: Washington needs comprehensive, synergistic mitigation/adaptation strategies, not tax breaks for data centers. If it doesn't work for farmworkers, it doesn't work.
Floodwaters are just one threat faced by these WA workers
Some farmworkers, who put food on our tables, say they have to choose between braving floodwaters and going without pay or facing retaliation from employers.

This is WILD.

Power goes out in San Francisco and the robot cars, needing the lights to "self" drive, all stop at once, blocking streets and emergency vehicles - which are needed more than ever in a black out!

We knew AI causes power outages. Turns out it also makes them worse by being stupid.
Waymo has halted service in San Francisco after numerous videos & images showed its autonomous cars snarling traffic during the blackout.

With traffic lights down, Waymos across the city stopped dead in their tracks at intersections.

As the cost of living in urban areas becomes so out of reach for many WA families, ppl are pushed into fire zones & flood plains; then they are more at harm due to impacts of climate change. These are equity and environmental justice issues; need compassionate solutions for vulnerable communities.

The thing I am asked the most is “what can I do?” Followed by “is there any point?”

I am not asked “Is the climate crisis real/bad?”

There’s your lever. It’s right there, with a big flashing light, and you still have people saying “no, no, don’t pull the lever, that’s hopium!”

Counterpoint: physical scientists are wildly unqualified to provide insight on the social, political and technological shifts required.

@rebeccasolnit.bsky.social is absolutely correct: coal, oil and gas are not mandatory. Rampant capitalism is not inevitable. ExxonMobil isn't all-powerful.
This is what happens when non-climate scientists write about the climate crisis without really understanding where we are or where we are headed
