I talk about the intersection of sports, gender, politics and pop culture. Denmark’s only WNBA expert. She/her. Some writing in Danish to be expected.
Hugely disappointed in Nneka

hi hello if you called out comedians for participating in the Riyadh Comedy Festival but don't have a problem with Nneka becoming a partner in this new Saudi women's bball league, you should consider why you're being a hypocrite

Sports in 2025 in a nutshell: the President of the WNBA Players Association has chosen to align herself with perhaps the world’s foremost purveyor of human rights abuses against women while being the public face of a fight over the exploitation of WNBA players
Nneka Ogwumike has announced that she has joined the Saudi backed global women’s league, Project B, as a part owner. #wnba

The WNBPA has issued a statement re: Napheesa Collier's comments.

"The leaders of the league and its teams would benefit from listening to her powerful statement. The players know their value even if the league does not."

One obvious thing about the labor negotiations that I think is unique to the W vs other sports leagues: I think the league has much less leverage than other pro leagues do. These players already gotta get their bread somewhere else.

Napheesa Collier's full statement at the beginning of her exit interview.

She directly quotes conversations with Cathy Englebert that legitimately call into question how the WNBA is being led. (Part 1/2) #WNBASky

Bluesky’s limitations on video length are too bad because one video can’t contain all four minutes of Napheesa Collier absolutely ethering WNBA leadership

Englebert's job is to be a heat magnet and take away attention from the group really negotiating the WNBA CBA, which is the NBA. By all means, boo her ass off when she rears her head (especially during in-game interviews, PLEASE) but save some vitriol for Adam Silver and the NBA owners.

Napheesa Collier concludes her statement with:

"We have the best league in the world. We have the best fans in the world. But we have the worst leadership in the world."

Why is there a contingent of Liberty fans always trying to fire Sandy
1. Who the hell are you getting that's a better coach than her?
2. Why??
3. If you fire Sandy, between 10 and 15 other WNBA teams are calling her offering a job the next day

With Sandy Brondello out, Cheryl Reeve has officially been on the job longer than every other WNBA coach combined.

Cheryl Reeve's tenure: 5768 days
Every other WNBA coach combined: 4529 days

Wouldn’t have guessed that Sandy Brondello would be without a job, while Chris Kolances is still employed.

NEWS:

The New York Liberty have parted ways with coach Sandy Brondello.

Her contract won’t be renewed for 2026.

I’m obviously not in the locker room but it feels like Sandy Brondello is treated with a level of expectations that pretty much no other coach in the league has to match, first in Phoenix and then in New York
